Red "x" Of Death!!!!!!!!!!!

I was shooting a short today and a prop hit the camera as it was recording. The next time I pressed record a little red x popped up in the upper left corner. I Figured it was because the battery was getting really low, so i kept shooting. When i went to watch my footage i found all of it was ruined. The timecode had a asterick next to it too. I poped in a new tape and recorded some stuff and it played back perfectly, so I figure the camera's ok. Have any of you seen this before and what can i do to fix the footage, or is it gone?

Help me out,
Will

Wow, thats really weird man. I was once shooting in some fairly high heat, and the camera image just went all crazy looking, like a blue version of the matrix! After powering down and powering up again, it still looked weird, so I tried a third time... back to normal. I attribute it to heat and only temporary, I haven't had any issues since, and my footage looks great. I guess what I'm saying is its probably just a one time incident that didn't harm the camera. If anything, it sounds like your tape might have been slightly forced off the record heads.

By the way, I once shot Betacam in like 100+ degree weather, direct sunlight, man, those cameras are tough as nails, still recorded, but you could see all kinds of noise in the image...

Shot a 3 hour scene in the desert in July with temps around 115F. Quickly learned to keep the camera covered while not rolling to keep it "cooler" otherwise got the RED X until it cooled down. I did not film while red X was going and my footage came out fine.

Are you guys saying that you waited until the red x went away by itself or did you take some action such as ejecting the tape and putting it back in, or turning the cam off and then on?

When I got the red X one time, I took out the tape and put it back in, thinking that it would reset the warning.. boy was I wrong.. sure it kept on recording without the red x warning but the image was dropping out like crazy upon playback!

Have any of you seen this before...

Wow. I dont know about that, but my camera does makes a rattling noise when I take it out of the box. It sounds like something is loose in there. I think it might be broken.

Mine used to do that too. I took it apart and took out a big plastic looking thing... put it back together and the rattle was gone. I guess something must have come loose, but it works without it so I don't know...

I thought it might be the lens so I was going to just squirt some super glue between the focus ring and the zoom ring. Glad I read your post first, though.

What did you use to take the camera apart, though. Do you have a special tool? Mine didnt come with one. I used a butter knife from the kitchen, but I may have screwed something up. Do you have any pictures of what you removed in case I get this thing opened?

I took a picture of it...

I think maybe the top part came off and air got inside?

Well, I couldn't find that part. And I couldn't really find anything that seemed to be rattling. I did take out a few things that looked suspicious just in case. OH. One thing I did find was a little red x looking thing. I think that's what ended up on that other guy's screen. I took mine out just to make sure it doesnt end up on my screen. I dont like having to turn my camera on and off to get things to go away. I usually just leave it on all the time. If the battery gets low I plug the camera in. The chrager cant charge a battery and power the camera, though, so I had to change it so it could. Good thing I am good with electronic stuff.

I would take a picture of where I found the red X so the other guy can find his and take it out, but my camera isnt working. I mean my still camera. I opened it up to fix something and it didnt go back together too well.

Are those last 3 posts serious? Dude that's messed up don't mess with a junior member and devonsloan dude it's just ur image stablizer, don't mess with it they all do that.

Whats the scary red x mean?

Whats the scary red x mean?

Truthfully does anyone have any idea what the meaning of that red x means? im in the midst of finishing up a film short and it popped up on my screen. I used my panny head cleaner which seemed to be a temp solution and the camera filmed fine until about 2 hours into my next day of work.Any suggestions on how to eliminate or possibly tell what the problem may be? thanks in advance.
