What do you guys reccomend for hosting high quality videos? Preferably free, although I wouldn't mind paying a small monthly fee or something for full (or close to it) quality. I guess I could use rapidshare, but are there any free, high quality streaming websites?
check out what we've done at Dabbler.ca . The site is hosted by 1and1.com. we pay something like $4.99/month and run a custom FLV player to achieve the excellent video quality. we tried out QuickTime which worked fine but we wanted a player that could run smoothly without any plugin issues and FLV was just better.
Morten--nice website! I was wondering how you were able to embed a flash player in your 1&1 website. I just got off the phone with 1&1 tech support and they told me that they do not allow streaming on their sites.
Also, if I want to add my own html code to my site, I have to play an extra $10 a month (I'm currently paying $5 a month of the domain name and a server). Does your $5 a month allow you to add your own code, or do you pay more? Is this a common practice?
"Streaming" refers to dedicated streaming servers designed for hosting & distributing large amounts of real-time media files - often live.
However just watching video from a website is actually just downlaoding - most systems these days used "prograssive downloads", meaning that you can start watching the file before it's done downloading, this isn't actually streaming - and any web host can host progressively downloadable files.
Paying extre for HTML support? That's normally included in the "server" part of any hosting package .. though of course simple domains can be hosted seperatly as just addresses.
I use 1and1 as well, although I have not had good experiences with their technical support at all. Maybe it's a coincidence, but I always got terrible service when I called in with a problem. I still use them though, and have been pleased overall.
