SHORT FILM: The Elevator

the lesson is "what does fear look like". The woman is in an elavator and she is afraid of heights, so she's scared to be going to the top floor of this building. I wasn't too thrilled with the idea of putting this one together because i thought it would be pretty hard to get the point acrossed, but I did the best I could with it. I don't write these films, I just put them together. I agree, they don't make much sense by themselves, I guess you would need to be involved with the devotional website that these video are for.

Sorry, I'm a Christian, and I'm pretty knowledgeable of the Bible, but the verses you displayed made no sense in what was going on in the clip. Really confusing even with your explanation.

Ya, i mean there shot well and editing is nice. Im not hating, i guess i just dont understand videos like everyone else lol...What's with that one with the guy standing outside... why is he? lol

Ben, yeah I totally agree with you. like i said i don't come up with these concepts i'm just hired to make them. I think the basis of this video was that the lesson is focusing on the Apostles. The very first verse states "and those who followed were afraid". So the lesson is based around that. I agree the other verses really don't fit but it's not my call.

como, the "freezing man" video, if I remember correctly, is about "us turning from God's help even though we know we need it". The question you asked, why is he, is exactly what the company wanted viewers to think because it's a good question for a devotional, why do we turn from God when we know we need him. That film worked out pretty well because it's suppose to be very strange.

really? you guys dont get the elevator thing? parallel with the quotes? I think it's pretty transparent. The J man his heading towards ascencion, juxtaposed with a woman in an elevator. if you know the story, you know J gets anxious at parts of the last leg of his journey, as does the woman in the elevator. then they hourney's over, and the destination was worth the ordeal. Notice how there's peace at the top of the elevator (peace after ascending). standard juxtaposition. Aesthetics 101. I thought It worked well.

excellent hans! thanks for comment. I think the way you took the story is exactly how the visual developer took it. I was wrong with my explaination, the "what does fear look like" was another video that I worked on. It's hard to pick up on for most people though, including me. You really have to have someone explain it who has a lot of knowledge of the J man's story. I like how you called him the J man, that's awesome. thanks again!

Now that makes more sense! I get it now, but i still think some better verses could of been chosen to really clear up the confusion.

Hans - I get your explanation, and it would make perfect sense were it not for the fact that when the short ends, the woman still seems terrified. I wasn't feeling any "peace at the top" - and the music was still very tense up to the end.

I think some sense of peace at the end would have helped to tie this together somewhat.
And, while not in your control - some way to get across that this woman is afraid of heights in the beginning would have helped tremendously - but seeing as this is part of a lesson, I'm assumign the audience would know that before watching?

As far as shooting - I could have done without the handheld zooms in the elevator.
There were a couple that were really punchy, and seemed a bit out of place for my taste. The handheld was fine... and fitting, but the zooming stuck out a bit.

Had you had more zooming - you would have had a 24 thing going on.
But it was only here and there, which wound up feeling like it wasn't intentionally a 'style'

Oh - and by the way - is that a typo in the title?

It says 'MARK 10:32-24' which doesn't seem to make much sense.

Is that supposed to be 34 instead of 24?

yeah that would be a typo. there was no handheld at all in this video. the quick zooms were all on sticks. I did do a few very jerky movements trying to help create a sense of uneasy-ness. This video has not been approved yet so some of the changes you are suggesting may just happen, like with the music and such. Thanks for all the input guys!

Now that I know she was afraid of heights I get it - I just got lost when she got to the top and there was nothing threatening there, just her looking around. As a severe acrophobic myself elevators just dont bother me. Now if she was climbing up a ladder...

Well shot and edited though. The handheld look worked well here as did the increasing speed of the elevator and the beeping of the floors going by. I just got lost as to why she was afraid. Maybe more zooms to the ground below or something.

good video, It was done really well, I checked out a lot of the other videos on your pages, the filming is done really well through out props!

Maybe Matt. 8:23-34, Mark 4:35-41- 5:1-20, or Luke 8:22-39 would have better illustrated the fear while keeping Jesus as a comforter, then you have the "Peace, be still," thing going on and the allusion to facing fear with a comforter greater than yourself could have come across... cause I live for subtext and I didn't immediately get it... and it's not death that makes the J man anxious, it's separation.
