24pA w/ a FireStore FS-4 & Vegas

Well, the title basically says it all, except that I'm using an DVX100A. I just bought an FS-4, like literally this morning. I'm really looking forward to having a backup for filming weddings. Should be delivered sometime next week I guess.

At any rate, I searched through the threads and couldn't find a lot of definitive data about people using an FS-4 with 24pA and Vegas.

Just thought I'd poke around an see if anyone has any suggestions or recommendations.

I don't think there's a whole lot to it -- Vegas should be able to work with the files on the FireStore without much of any fuss -- just don't use Quicktime mode when you're recording.

After getting my firestore, and running some test on various settings I figured I'd give some advice to others. Maybe everyone already knows this already, but I couldn't find it in my research.

If you are shooing 24pA with your DVX, have your firestore set to avi type2. There is an avi type2 24p mode on the firestore...but it appears to introduce pulldown in the device itself.....so when you bring your clip onto Vegas it shows the clip as only having 19.181 fps. It looks very choppy and freaked me out at first. If you shoot with the FireStore set to avi type2, when you bring it into a vegas 24p time line vegas will see it as having 23.976 fps. Then it will look and play perfectly.

I can't wait to get my Tekkien battery hooked up to this thing so I can film for more than 90 mins.

Yeah, AVI type 2 is the way to go. I called firestore about it and that's exactly what they told me to use. I've been using the firestore fs4 since 2005 with Sony Vegas and 24pa. It's good finally find another person who uses it as well!

Damn!! Thanks!! I've had a firestore for over a year and I quit using it because of the choppy footage. I just figured it a bad unit(bought it on ebay...supposedly "new"). Now that that I know what the real problem is, I can bring it back out. Thanks again!

Glad I could help. I don't normally come into this forum unless I'm researching or have a question, but thought I'd check on this thread b/c I stayed up late last night making a case/mount for my firestore to attach to the main rail of my DVRig. Just made me wonder if anyone had replied to this.

My only regret is not buying a firestore sooner. This cuts out a huge process in workflow and saves tons of time.

Noise

Noise

Yeah, the Firestore FS4 is awesome. The only problem I have with it is that the fan comes on after a little bit of use. This creates unwanted noise. I bought an extra long firewire cable in order to try to remedy this but still, it's an inconvenience. Not sure if this is the case with the new ones, as I bought the FS4 pretty much the day it came out so I have the old, bulkier model.

Just thought I'd give an update. I shot my first wedding with the use of the FireStore last night. I can not say enough good things about this product. Captured everything perfectly, and took me 5 secs to start the files moving over to my PC. Then I ate lunch while it did it's thing. After that, I was editing.....vs. another 7 hours capturing tape. Just awesome.

does anybody know which FS-4 is being refered to here?
I see B&H sells two FS-4's.
the FS-4 HD and the FS-4pro Hd.
one is twice as expensive as the other

this would be for my dvx100a

I picked up the FS-4 HD for my DVX100b, works great, and like they said use avi type2 for everything. This thing also works great with My XH A1 in HD mode. ( of course under the HD mode not avi2)

This may be a no-no, but I unplugged my fan to conserve both noise and battery power. Used it on numerous occasions since, even a couple of hot days in the sun with no problems.

Thanks Kdawg, my recording head on my dvx-a just crapped out, and no head cleaning is going to fix it, but it still records to my dvrack so Im needing that FS-4
