$4000 is still very low for a used hvx. What I've seen in the marketplace recently has been around $4700, although almost everyone is selling them as packaged deals with hard cases and stuff for $5000+

DONT!
- save your money for a little while longer until you can afford to buy NEW.

buying used gear from folks you dont know is D A N G E R O U S ! ! !

not that you wont find good reputable folks online (as ive bought a couple things used from the folks in the forum here - but i could afford to roll the dice) but if you cant afford even a new camera by itself - you DEFINITELY cant afford the risk of losing your butt on someone selling you a broken camera.

another thing to consider. there is a LOT more to using an HVX than just the camera - what about p2 cards or a firestore? lights? mics? tripods? a case even?

Most eBay auctions for like-new HVX's end between $4000 and $4500. The higher range is usually when the seller is clearly a professional selling the HVX, a firestore, follow-focus, etc, all at once.

I agree.

But I also agree that you're going to need p2's or a firestore...

I gotta weigh in on this real quick, only becuase I myself was very weary of buying a used HVX when I was looking to buy a camera. I tend to try to avoid used stuff in general, and something like an HD camera didn't seem like the right thing to break that methodology on, so I bought new. I was very happy with my purchase, however, as I'm now starting to consider possibly selling my camera, I'm also reconsidering my philosophy on the matter. You see, my camera is in perfect condition, and was only used for a total of maybe 200hrs, since we got it specifically for a feature, and only used it during pre-production and principaly photography. In hindsight, I'd be willing to bet my situation isn't an anomoly, and a lot of productions sell their equipment when they're done with it (although I could be wrong). So that said, I wish I would've sought a situation like the one i'm currently in and bought a good used one. If you're gonna buy used, try to find someone who's only used it one a production or two.

Best,

Todd

Also, in regards to, "you're going to need p2's or a firestore."

You're not going to need a firestore unless you wanna get extremely frustrated everytime you try to shoot something.

I can't recommend P2 over Firestore enough.

Obviously, I just one guy with his own opinion, but my expeirence with my firestore was very frustrating. Firewire cable kept disconnecting anytime I moved the camera. This was a year or so ago, so maybe that's been remedied, but between the fireiwre issue and the firmware upgrade causing it to crash and the battery dying, etc, our Firestore didn't last through the 1st week of pre-production.

P2 all the way.
