P2 Gear for DVCPRO HD monitoring?

Can anybody confirm that going out of the firewire from Avid through the P2 Gear to a production monitor via component or SDI will work? Basically using the P2 gear as an expensive (or inexpensive, depending on how you look at it) firewire passthrough device? According to the brochure, it seems like it would work, making it the least expensive way, (at around $3,200 street price) to professionally monitor DVCPRO HD from the lower end Avids.

If this DOES let us monitor out of the AVID via firewire to component to monitor, I'm getting one! I just read the entire Operating Instructions for it from the Panasonic website and nowhere does it say is doesn't do it. That is promising because I seem to remember that the HVX200 user manual specifically does say that it will NOT allow use of the firewire to component output for monitoring. If anyone can confirm the use of the AG-HPG10 (P2 Gear) for AVID monitoring through the firewire to component output, I'd really appreciate it!

Yeah, I'm surprised it's not getting more attention because of this. The brochure claims to be able to monitor the firewire output from the Firestore FS100 to sdi and component... no reason why avid firewire output should be any different.

If it does work, it has a bunch of additional things going for it:

It seems to be a little handy device for the field for backups or viewing footage.

You get an extra charger and battery.

If you happen to cut on Final Cut (or any system that outputs DVCPRO HD) as well, you could use it on that setup too

Hi,

Yes you can take the 1394 out of the NLE and have the P2 Gear sit between that and the monitor fed by HD-SDI. It will work perfectly.

Thanks,

jan

Jan, you wonderful woman! You just made my day (which happens to be my birthday). Will the component video out also work for this? Look forward to your visit to Denver next week at the Expo! Thanks for coming out to see us.

Hi,

It works the same way with component out.

See you at the show. I think I get there a little after it opens, but should be there by around noon on Wednesday.

Best,

Jan

this DOES sound good. the first one that has this working as firewire pass-through from avid - please report real life experiences here.
