hello all. I have a sticker i used to put on the dvx100b to get proper framing of 16x9. now that i have the hvx200 I want to buy a 7 inch or more lcd screen that attaches to the camera. My twoi questions are. 1) which is a good one that supports hd? 2) will this properly fram the picture of hd without the need to stickers that overlay? please let me know. Thank u so much.

There are a lot of candidates. If you want the best picture for a reasonable amount of money go with the Marshall V-R70P-HDA 7" LCD Monitor for HD/SD.
(and yes it will display 16x9 as well as 4x3).

Hey Vortex,
are you in Los Angeles?

I'm coming up with a monitor that is 8.4" and will have the resolution of the panasonic $4200 one, and it will be priced lower than the marshall. It will also have better viewing angle and be brighter than the marshall, and in my opinion a much better screen and controller card.

I'm getting my box tomorrow and will have a working unit wed.

If you are in LA, you can come see it.

If we can get the HVX meeting in the way, I'll bring my stuff and people can check it out.

Let me know if you are interested.

Luis

Hey Luis,

I'll be in LA for DV Expo in Dec and if you have that monitor ready (as well as anything else for that matter), I'd love to get a look at it.

Nebtek are now offering a 7" monitor with a higher spec than the V-R70P-HDA 7" which is called the NEB70HD. It apparently shows focus in white (as opposed to the panasonic's Red system) and after exchanging mail with Rob at Nebtek, I'm sorely tempted (jut under $2k with panasonic battery adapter). Did anyone see this monitor at NAB, or anywhere else? Does anybody hava an opinion on its worth over the V-R70P-HDA 7?

I think Rob at Nebtek sounds like a straight up guy, but I'd like an independent opinion if I"m going to drop $2k . . . .

Thanks to you all.

Hey Ned,

Would love to show you my products.

I'm picking up the enclosure for my LCD today, so yes, I will have it ready. Lets meet up in December for sure.

Also I will have the FS-Forever (removable hard drive Mod for the FS-100) ready some time next week with the rail & battery attachments.

Were you interested in that?

Thanks,

Luis

A Chinese made monitor should do fine, unless you feed it to your dog.

The Ikan is decent for its price.

We've had some discussion of this before, but the problem seems to be that its connectors are soldered to the board. If one of those delicate connections breaks, then the whole monitor is shot.

For the money, I think it is decent enough to judge focus and composition. Nebtek, I hear, is about to ship their monitor for about $2K and it will be very interesting to see what that master of innovation, Luis, is about to brew up.

hey guys.
Just got my cases. was supposed to get them yesterday, but like everything else its always longer than you think.
I'm mounting the hardware in the case as we speak. will post pictures either later today, or tomorrow.
I'm so excited. (this first unit will also be my unit for filming. I held of buying a marshall or ikean cus I wanted something better. so Finally. :) )

and thanks for your kind words. Ned.

I have to say, I'm being less and less impressed by the broadcast products coming to us from China lately. I suppose maybe it has a lot to do with the cost and that a more expensive Chinese made monitor will be better than a less expensive one.

Regardless, I have bought cheap (Chinese made) LCD monitors in the past that have mysteriously ceased to function correctly after a few years (ok, maybe 5 years) with no abuse and little use.

I know this is a tangent, but I think people have become far too used to these low cost pieces of gear lasting only a certain amount of time and then breaking.

We're [keeping] this Ikan unit, since it IS very good for a framing/focusing monitor considering its price and the fact that Ikan is VERY receptive to the needs and concerns of its customers.

Interesting...

Thoughts:

The case looks huge. I tend to look for onboard monitors that have small cases.

You should have jacks on the case instead of those cables sticking out.

Those prices seem a bit close to the Marshall and Nebtek units which are proven designs. You might want to reassess the pricing.

Onboard batteries are preferable on my planet. I tend to dislike all kinds of extraneous stuff attached to a camera.

Hey Chris,
Thanks for checking it out. As per your remarks maybe these comments might help.

The case does look huge, but if you look at the dimensions, its actually 1/2" smaller or so on one side from the Panasonic 8.4" monitor. This is also an 8.4" LCD screen. Hence bigger than the marshall and Nebtek. (but the resolution is 1024x768 rather than 800x480)

Those cables sticking out are temporary. the design will have BNC connectors. I thought I made that clear but maybe not. Also, for the RGB component, they will be connectors mounted to the case. then a cable will go to the board. So you will not be able to break them off the board as you can with the cheaper Ikean monitors. (on those if you break the BNC, you pretty much are screwed)

Those prices are close to the marshall and nebtek, but then again they are like I said before, for an 8.4" screen with 1024x768. If you look at the panasonic ($4890 msrp. http://catalog2.panasonic.com/webap...alogId=13051&itemId=68537&surfModel=BT-LH900A ) or any other solution out there with this size screen or resolution I think you'll find this to be a great deal. (in fact, I don't make nearly as much as I should. I was trying to bring prices as low as possible, but the components are the most expensive I could find, and hence the price has to reflect it)

And as for the onboard batteries, I'm already working on it. I will probably provide the ability to mount the Tekkeon Battery to the back of the lcd, but I'm also working on a dual Panasonic battery, and a Anton Bauer option. Of course these will cost more.

I hope I've answered your concernes. Please keep commenting as I read these threads and look for info on what people are looking for in an LCD solution.

Thank you again.

edit: also the ability to move the batteries to the back of the unit will help when it comes to balancing for shoulder mount work. Otherwise the rig is EXTREMELY front heavy. Just a thought.
