Do I need a male to female xlr cable to connect a rode ntg-1 mic? or is it the other way, female to male?

Depends on what you want it to be connected to :P
XLR connectors are pretty standardized in the audio industry. Outputs are male, inputs are female.

As long as the device you're plugging into has XLR inputs and follows industry standards, a male to female XLR mic cable should get the job done.

Other connectors can be a bit different. The chassis-mounted side on 1/4", 1/8", bantam, RCA, BNC, and RS-422 connections are usually female.

A handful of gender barrells (male-male, female-female) are a good addition to your kit.

It really depends on what model of Rode microphone you have. The NTG-1 requires Male/Female, the NTG-2 requires Female/Male.

Sorry, I couldn't resist. All standard XLR cables are Male on one end, Female on the other, and it really doesn't matter which way the signal is flowing - you will connect the female end to your microphone, the male end to your camera.

But, what you didn't ask, and I'm going to tell you, is that what you really need to worry about is cable quality. You want to find cables made with cable from Canare or one of the other high-end brands, and the connectors should be Neutrik.

Hope this helps.

Phil
