Trying to achieve cleaner HVX footage...

Ive been shooting with my hvx for awhile now,

I'm wondering why my footage looks like this http://www.temptu.com/still.png

I always find that it looks sort of muddy.

I'm starting to wonder if it just isn't in focus completely...

Any comments/help would be appreciated.

Your image isn't that muddy. The HVX can do better but not by much. That said, I have a few suggestions.

When photographing a face, always focus to the eyes. Here is a trick: Zoom in to the subject's eyes and focus so that the white glare circle is as sharp as possible. Then zoom out to the appropriate focal length and the focus will be maintained.

Find out what F-stops the HVX is sharpest at. If you shoot wide open you will sacrifice sharpness.

Apart from focus and F-stop, sharpness is affected by your Detail Level, Detail Coring and Skin Tone Detail settings. I also noticed that the edges of your subject lack definition because the background was keyed or blown out. There's not much you can do about that with an HD camera.

Right now all my settings are at 0 with Cinelike V gamma

Would lowing my ped work as well to clean up the muddiness?

I noticed the significant reduction of noise in bpress but for me it appears to contrasty, Is there a way to achieve clean footage while still shooting low contrast?

Cinelike V, but bump your detail up to +2 or +3. Cineline gammas negate edge enhancement, so 0 in Cinelike, is the same as like -4 in Bpress or somehting... in cinegamma add a dose of detail, and actually raise your coring setting to 0. Coring is the enemy, in an effort to kill "noise" ( and dont een get me started about poor monitoring) people jack the coring up to +7 and that literally smushes detial away.

Shoot CinelikeV its nice and clean and still has that Cinelike smooth gamma while being a bit more contrasty that CineD.

Also the HVX is sharpest at F2.8-F8 Its not bad at wideopen, but its TERRIBLE at F11.

Lowering the Master Pedestal will crush the blacks. That might make the image look less flat, bringing out the difference between lights and darks, but it won't increase the sharpness or detail. I always shoot with my Master Pedestal at -3 or lower, sometimes to -8. This makes the image more filmlike.

B Press is the least noisy gamma but in my opinion the least beatiful. If you have enough light you should never need to use B Press.

As for the cleaner image...I think that image looks kind of nice. No doubt, you can futz with the settings to alter detail, master ped, etc. but what's wrong with it?

LOL the hat is amazing! Cool i'll mess around with the settings- i did for along time and then I got to the point where I just assumed it was best to shoot everything at 0 and fix in post.... I assume that shooting flat doesn't mean shooting with everything set to 0

You see, this was shot with my HVX, i dont see any noise or sharpness issues....

NO not at all! Infact a "neutral" image is like,
DET +2
Vdetail 0
Coring 0
Chroma -1 (maybe even -2)
colortemp 0
Master ped -6

And so Mark Harris, you see to get the Film look, its all magic in post. Look at what i did.... It looks like Vision 2, or Eterna500t.... simply magnificent.
