$1650 for 32gig P2

Dunno when, but it will come down, that's for sure. And with the 32 GB card being a lot quicker to arrive after the 16 than the 16 was after the 8, we might speculate that the 64 will be as quick or more so. That, along with more competitors getting on the solid-state memory bandwagon, should keep prices falling fast...

Hopefully : )

Jan already said that the 64 was "right around the corner." I speculate that might mean NAB 2008 (April) maybe?

And yes, with every manufacturer of 2/3" cameras now offering solid state, that should keep the prices falling.

That's the way things go. I paid that much for 8GB cards, and those who came before me paid even more for less.

i cant believe ANYONE would complain about $1650 for a 32 gig card?!?!??!!?

thats freakin LUNCH - comparatively!

i paid $1300 for my 8 gig less than a year ago.
hell, i remember paying $6000 for a 4 gig ultra scsi drive back in the early days of NLEs.

all these threads with folks worrying if "now is the time to buy" or "are prices going to drop" - stop wasting effort worrying. buy it and get to work. this kind of gear pays for itself in like 1 job for pete's sake!

Price is absurd.

We paid $1250 for an 8GB card in March 2006. Come to think of it, we paid $1200 for a 800 MEGABYTE drive to run with Video Vision Studio. The user group has changed, hasn't it?

The price is what it is; I have no idea why anybody can make this statement.

Go with the ExpressCard/34 solutions with the new Sonys, but if you want to use the HVX, this is the price of admission

I'm still waiting for B&H to send my 16GB cards... I'm getting itchy. I want to play with the top of the line cards for at least a day before they become semi-obsolete, heh.

What exactly is panasonic hoping to accomplish with releasing the 32GB now? As I recall the 16GB cards are still pretty pricy. Wouldn't they want to milk that for a little longer? I shouldn't be talking though, since I don't remember when the 16GB came out anyway.

They can't come soon enough. A long time ago, I stated that we would be in a good place with $50 / GB cards. I've reconsidered. I now want $25 / GB cards. I see a 64GB P2 card for $1600 in our 18 month future.

Early adopters will certainly pay more.

We're going to stick with 16 and 8s for a while.

Pricing will drop eventu ally; perhaps to coincide with the release of the Sony XDCAM EX cams.

Unless you've figured out a way to add P2 slots to the HVX, the bigger/cheaper cards are desperately needed. I know it's hard to imagine, but some people like to do field production without a laptop and a PA offloading cards all day. :)

320 minutes will get me through a day. We do five-tape days on some of the reality shows. Yeah, I know...

Conversely, for anyone doing narrative, two P2 64s might cover nearly half a feature at 5:1 ratio. That's sick.

For my work, who's the sucker who gets to offload the cards @ 160 minutes per day?! I guess it still beats batching tapes at 70 minutes per 63!

Whatever.

Don't understand this statement; the Sony ExpressCard is the same price as the P2 system, and they haven't announced 32GB yet. They have a 16GB for $900, same as Panasonic.

My thought is that the EC/34 solutions were NOT Proprietary.

I know the prices are similar, but I thought anybody could make them.

We currently use the original P2Store in the field and laptops to external duplicate drives in the studio.

ExpressCard is not proprietary, but SxS is. It is not a simple mass storage device, there is a protocol behind it. From a Sony press release:
In addition, SanDisk and Sony have optimized the technology protocol for controlling communication between hardware and SxSTM memory cards to enable high-speed transfer of large files, such as high-definition video, to PCs for non-linear video-editing.
It will be interesting to see whether SanDisk would be willing to license SxS to any of its competitors. Sony probably won't mind if another supplier of the cards becomes available, but SanDisk probably would.
