Power Book as Field Monitor?

I just got the HVX and I'm wondering how I could peview my HD footage on location.
Is my old G4 Powerbook (1.25 GHz) strong enough to give me a decent preview of my material? I run FCP 5.0 on it and I only have 512 of RAM.

What are the alternatives to preview the HD footage?

What do you want to gain from the preview??
If you just want to be able and see the shot compostion on a larger screen then use a portable dvd player.

Im pretty sure for the HVX your going to need at least a G5 with 2gb and Final cut HD

The portable DVD player is a great idea. Sounds great for my budget.
All I want is to know if the shot was focused correctly and if the whitebalancing was okay (I don't need a 100% accuracy for that).

Actually - I never checked my footage on location. So I'm open for any kind of suggestions.
I just have to watch out for my budget...

Some portable DVD players can be switched so that the video output becomes and input, turning the LCD into a basic field monitor. Not great, but probably better than the built-in LCD.

Worked for me on my GL1, especially when using 16:9 mode. My HV20 works the same way, not too good for focusing though, but I get to see the whole 16:9 frame instead of worrying about the slight cutoff around the edges of the HV20's LCD. That cutoff has messed up quite a few shots on some recent class projects of mine, so the DVD player has been plugged in ever since.

no. without some sort of software help (and even then) a powerbook isnt really good enough to use as a monitor.

get a cheap ikan hd monitor - its not perfect, but its great for monitoring in the field
