Why doesn't Letterbox match up on my 2 cameras?

I have an HVX200 and a DVC30.

When I shoot both camera's in DV mode "Letterbox", they have borders, but they look the same

When I shoot the HVX in Letterbox at 720 30p, which comes out as 720 60i on the Firestore, I get a much wider picture then the DVC30 in Letterbox.

It is not an awful huge difference, but enough to not make me happy with the edit.

What is the answer?

Thanks in advance!

The "HVX Letterbox" you referred to isn't letterboxed at all, it is 16:9 DV (known as SQUEEZE mode on the HVX). The DVC30 doesn't have a true 16:9 mode, and that is what is causing your problem.

You are looking at printscreens of of highly compressed .wmv's.

They are hazy. It was a lowlight situation on stage and the sun was setting directly behind the stage, coming directly at me on the top two pictures.

I had just got the HVX the day before the shoot and was definately trying to figure things out.

It was just lowlight on the bottom two pics. I lightened up the bottom two a little in Vegas.

So what you are saying is, the HVX or a DVX won't match up with my DVC unless I shoot in non-letterbox?

I tried it in sqeeze mode and it seems to not match up either. I am going to try again right now.

Thanks

SQUEEZE mode is anamorphic (non-square pixel) DV. The DVC30 doesn't support that and does widescreen by letterboxing the image in a 4:3 frame.

So they won't ever match up? They seem to match up when I shot DV from the HVX?

So, I don't need to test every different setting, like I am doing right now?

Thanks again,

This place is a wealth of information.

You in final cut? Well im sure you can do this in adobe premiere but here it is in final cut (warning, it may look squished, and it probably will, but it will get it to match)

Take your footage from one camera, and then take the footage from the other camera thats off....put it ONTOP of the layer (in final cut or whateverp orgram u are using) and bring the top layer's opactiy down to about 30 percent. This way you can see both video, but barely seeing the first top clip. Double click it, (single click in adobe i think) and go to the Motion property (i think this is the same one in premiere)

look for aspect ratio and it should be set as 0. If it isn't o well. Play with it untill you get the look as the footage UNDERNEATH the layer.

You dont have to put the layers on top of eachother to do this, its just a references so you can match the footage easier!

So play with the aspect ratio and work witht that, go under distortion and try playing with that to!

Ok,
here is what I have found so far. There was a tab to click on the (edit>switches>maintain aspect ratio). I unclicked that on the DVC30 track and came out with something pretty good. Almost a perfect match, but not exact. Here is how the test turned out.

Now if I could just find the place to change the aspect ratio in small increments I will be set.
