red grabs and state of HVX nation...

I went to the Red site to check on the latest on the camera. Is my math correct? It's about $37,000 to $40,000 to actually get a decked out operational camera? I'm not saying that's good or bad...just want to make sure my figures are correct.

I had a reservation for a RED (ordered back in June) but I just cancelled the order.
After realizing actual realistic cost of the camera (30-40,000) and the Post production headache it will cause unless you have a top end system- I had to let it go.
After I made the decision to bag the RED- I went out and shot some outstanding HVX footage over the weekend- no adaptor - just well compossed shots with good lighting. Everyone tells me it looks like film. I'm in love with this camera all over again.
I know I'm in the minority here but- Honestly, I wasn't that impressed with the RED footage I saw. It doesn't have the look I'm after. It's too clean.

Besides, if I ever get a creative idea worth the effort- I'll find someone else to put up the cash and shoot film. I prefer a little grit.
It's been said a million times- not the tool- it's what you do with it.

you can get a reasonably working red with still lenses for 22500:

Red 17500
CF Module 500
Nikon Still Lens mount
LCD from Panasonic - 2000
Nikon still lenses- 1000 for a wide range of lenses (2 hand)
Power pack 1000

you can invest on RED lenses latter, if you need them, that is. EVF is not essential these days, at least for narrative shooting, with LCD's like the panasonic with built in waveform.

This is pretty much how I figure it as well. $22,500 is a huge chunk of money of course, but still such a great deal in relation to the cost of comparable cameras.

My partner-in-crime and I have been breaking down equipment costs to begin shooting a project in the next year or two. We had an HVX on the list for some time, but are now considering the RED. It is a big price jump of course, but when you figure in the cost of P2 cards, 35mm adapter, and chosen items for P2 workflow... the cost of the RED starts to look a little better (no, I didn't say the same).

We are headed to Folsom this week to see the RED in action and watch as the footage is brought into FCP. This will play a big role in our decision. I can't wait.

Im not sure, but think the RED;s monitoring system is Proprietary. the LC runs from a special jack. im not sure if you can use a 3rd party monitor? can you?

Jannard had a Panasonic LCD hooked up to his RED One (presumably #1) and complained about the lack of visability in daylight. Apparently, the RED LCDs were sold through and he had to temporarily fly without one for the dragster shoot.

I think he actually shot without a viewfinder when it was all said and done. I've used the Panasonic LCDs outdoors enough to know that you can't see anything in them in daylight unless you have a hood that's a foot deep.

Love em in the studio though!

My only question here is: are there presently any shots from the Nikon still lenses that can be viewed? How do they hold up in such high resolution if youre talking about 2-4k? Standard HD lenses are coated over and over again (making them exe) so there is little or no ca (refer BG's recent article on CA and CAC tech).

Only posed as a question. Not knocking.

I'm not certain where I saw it, but some Nikon series lenses were chosen for a recent feature film over conventional cinema lenses. There was discussion on this on the RED site and at Cinematography.net

It might have been that they were on a VistaVision process rig. Can't remember.

Eric, discussed in another thread here, Bourne Ultimatum used a modified Nikon lens. The 28-70mm I think. Had a special mount made, PL mount I imagine. Being f2.8 and light, it was preferred glass for run and gun. Lighter than the Cooke, etc.

I think I saw that the LCD was proprietary.. too bad too as might be a good option...

Anyone messed around with one yet? I'm happy with my HVX.. but could see a use for this with higher end clients and on a feature film that we are planning that's a lot of greenscreen work.. I also am excited as it will force the other players to develop comparable products in this price range... kind of like what the HVX has done.... and what the DVX did and the XL1 before that..

it's good for all of us. Not so good for people who own 150k 1080 cameras

As there are both HDMI and HD_SDI out on the Red, you have plenty of options for monitoring.

Greetings all.. Not wanting to start a flame or anything.. but has anyone seen the frame grabs up on hdforindies of the car burning rubber? Man.. that's so slick.. so clean and makes ya want a Red. The HVX was a logical jump up in quality since the price was right. Just wondering who's considering getttig a red.. or are you waiting to get to rent it like I am... Some of the footabe before didn't seem to get all buzzed about, but this stuff looks sweet. Can't wait to see more of it.. reminds me of that January 06 latenight viewing of footage of the HVX.. ahhh quite a nice revolution to be involved in and I bet the big boys might be sweating this little bugger...

NOT considering a RED 1 but if/when the RED mini becomes reality (vaporware right now) I might jump.................. if it is:
  • sub $6K
  • records 2K to CF in 4:2:2:
  • super 16 sized imager
  • 60 FPS or higher
  • Nikon/Canon DSLR mount capable
Those are my WAG's as to what might be possible for an 09 delivery. I'm also sure that Pani is not asleep at the wheel re this type of cam.

That might be a good choice John. I think that it's the idea of the Red and that its shaking things up like our HVX did. I was at the surf expo yesterday and seems like every filmmaker out there had an HVX.. and was finishing up their extreme sports video all shot on the P2. It's become the standard for action sports due to the slow motion and glorious footage. At a filmmakers round table, it was all P2 or above. Shoot, in another 4 months i will have had my HVX for 2 years already.. Man how that time has flown bye and it's funny to see my friend with their brand new sparkling camera.. Mine's like an old shoe.. warn and used and used and used... like a good hammer should be.
