You could always pack it in the double-box from Panasonic and for added security, place that in a larger box with styrofoam packing material. Of course, FedEx or UPS overnight. Other option is a Pelican case or something similar. Just insure it adequately.
another good reason to always keep your original packaging. even if i were shipping my hvx in my bulletproof pelican 1650 id probably still pack the case in the original box to reduce handler curiosity of what (if anything) is actually IN the case
If you do not have the original packing material, your safest way is a Pelican case. You may then even want to pack the Pelican case in additional packaging. But FedEx and UPS are usually very good with such items. Note that depending upon where you take the item to be shipped, they may actually want to look at the camera to verify what it is before insuring it for $5K or more. I once shipped an HVX via UPS overnight at the local UPS depot and they did open the box, look at the camera, reseal it. Counter woman then called a supervisor who signed for it and personally carried it to the back room, bypassing the usual throw it on the conveyor belt. Obviously it made it without damage because I never heard from the recipient that her camera was broken.
Ned's right - I have 8 Pelican cases in various sizes and ship and carry only in a bright orange Pelican with lots of foam! Never have heard of an orange case being stolen - too obvious.
Take off the battery when you ship for sure! Check with the carrier to make sure that you pack according to their standards. Insure for the full amount and you should be good to go. Most carriers suggest double boxing and 4 inches of cushion between gear and box. Peanuts are not considered proper packing material. So be extra careful choosing your packing supplies. Claims are only paid if the carrier decides that you packed according to their standards. They send out a 'packaging engineer' to inspect damaged goods. There engineers are supposedly unbiased  Yeah...
Thanks again for all the advice. After looking at shipping options and packaging, it became clear that I could get a last-minute airplane ticket for less than the cost of shipping the camera. Since I would be more comfortable carrying the camera with me, I took this route.
I ended up flying out, picking up the camera, and flying right back. Not the most fun way to spend a day, but I've been reunited with my camera with no worries of where it's been.:cheesy:
