red grabs and state of HVX nation...

Greetings all.. Not wanting to start a flame or anything.. but has anyone seen the frame grabs up on hdforindies of the car burning rubber? Man.. that's so slick.. so clean and makes ya want a Red. The HVX was a logical jump up in quality since the price was right. Just wondering who's considering getttig a red.. or are you waiting to get to rent it like I am... Some of the footabe before didn't seem to get all buzzed about, but this stuff looks sweet. Can't wait to see more of it.. reminds me of that January 06 latenight viewing of footage of the HVX.. ahhh quite a nice revolution to be involved in and I bet the big boys might be sweating this little bugger...

i dont know that the HVX and the RED can really be compared and contrasted. the red is what, 3x the price of an hvx???

its like comparing a mitsubishi eclipse to a mercedes sl

I'm looking forward to playing with it and renting.
Trying to learn as much about it and the workflow as possible.

Nowhere near the same class. Even renting is going to cost you. Week might run you as much as an HVX costs.

Not near the same class.. but relatively in the same league.. I mean, at a nice day rate you can pay it off quickly.. couldn't say that with comperable previous cameras like the cinealta or a full on varicam..

I know it's 3 times a much... but it's 10 times the camera wihtout being 30 times the price... It will take a huge leap to get one, but it's attainable atleast as a rental..

what do you think it'll be renting for a day?

In theory, it works. No telling what will happen when more people get there's. Market price for rental could go down, could go up?

Big thing is that you have to get one, and if you aren't already on the list, that's not til like six to eight months from now it looks like.

I think 1500.00 a day is what's going to show up, but who knows til it really starts? It's close enough now as it is... those with the cameras out should be renting soon or giving quotes.

The full Production Package is $1200/day in NZ. Which is about $940US...

So yeah, hiring a RED for a week would almost be the same as purchasing an HVX. But it is a completely different league.

Man that's cheap. When you say full production package, do you mean Red Lens, Batteries, etc? What's that all come with?

4k PRODUCTION CAMERA KIT
Red One Digital Cinema 4k Production Package

Red One Camera Body with PL Mount
Red One Premium Production Pack
Red Zoom 18-50mm (F2.8)
Red Lithium Ion 140Wh Batteries x4
Red Battery Charger/AC x2
Red EVF Viewfinder
Red LCD Screen 5.6" with 3m and 10m Extension Cables
Red Compact Flash Media 8GB x3
Red Flash (Compact Flash) Module

Lenses may come separate. It's all gibberish to me to be honest...

Different cameras, different packages and prices.
Of course different results.
But, the relation cost X benefit on the RED is incredible. A true revolution.

For someone familiar with HVX (most of us coming form the DVX) even the HPX is a substantial step forward. More weight, different lenses, deeper menu in calibrations, etc... Now, if you never filmed with cine lenses before and are not used to deal with a incredible amount of resolution and very shallow DOF, beware! RED is not for beginners.
It's clearly not for everyone, but as you (me, you, everyone...) improve your skills as a cinematographer RED should be consider as the next step.

I am so sick of Red. They just FINALLY sent out the first batch, which isn't even that many, and from what I heard somewhere might not be yet FULLY functional. <----may not be true, it's what I heard.

All you red fanatics are like little boys at night thinking of their favorite supermodel. Somehow I am thinking that HVX owners bought the HVX because they could afford it, and not the varicam, cinealta, viper, or other higher class HD camera..... which clearly shows the RED is in a higher league.... and the price is WAY more then 3x after you add all the additional stuff like red lenses and whatnot.

This is a flame thread, and my mind is on fire. How can you compare an HVX to a Red?!

All I have to say is "Love the one you got".

Loving the one you got is all well and good, but contemplating a leap in money or profits is another. Having one right now would pay for itself in no time. Like this company charging 6k a week for rental: http://silverado.cc/shop/product.php?productid=859&cat=0&page=1

So let's say it takes 8 weeks to recoup their investment... not too bad from there though and I'm sure it'll be a solid rental for a while. The FUNNY point about this is that because of the hype and demand they can charge 1500 a day or 6k a week when the price of the unit is too low to get that. 1500 a day is what a Varicam rents for with a full package.. same as a Cinealta which are both much more expensive cameras. That's what I"m getting at... You can get that kind of money for the Red, but not the investment amount. My bro who bought a Varicam and package.. cost him 180K. You can get a comperable Red for 40-50K... and get the same rental price... now that's something!

Different price and league yes... but playing with the big boys... maybe and it's fun to be a geek. Our beloved HVX has a great place and not going anywhere... If anything will be good to help updated versions and such get better out of competition.

My 2 cents...

My 2 cents...

I am watching RED closely.

I own an HVX and mostly produce corporate videos for web delivery.
RED exceeds my needs, and the needs of the company I work for.
I rent my equipment to my company, and I couldn't do that with a
RED.

Now, having said that, I also create short films as a hobby.
RED is more suited to that work flow. A full RED set up would cost
40k-60k, and there is still no way to monitor it. Most of the footage that
has been posted since REDs release has not been focused properly.

From what I have read from the reduser forums, many of the people that have
already plunked down the reservation cash don't have the skill to use the
camera that they are purchasing. If the company is able to get it's production
pipeline in order and deliver the cameras as promised, I think that there will
be plenty available second hand in one and a half to two years.

I believe that a lot of hobbyists will realize that they are not using their
investment often enough to justify their purchase. If you have 40-60k in
gear sitting around for 2-3 months while you go through post and
preproduction on your next short, you will think twice about being an
owner/operator. When they sell, I may buy. But that is 2 years out.

The other thing that I am hoping for from the RED revolution, is the
copetition's response to red. Why would I buy a an HPX500 for 15k
without a lens, when I can pop andother 2.5k and get a RED? I and many
others would make the stretch to 17. Especially when there is better DOF
and crisper image promised. But, in two years, there may be another option
besides RED at a similar price point from Panny, JVC, Canon or Sony.
(and my HVX will hold me over until then)

While not as clean as RED, I still find myself repeatedly impressed by the
quality of footage I get from my HVX, and will continue to profit until I'm
ready to take the next step. I'm realistic, and have no need to be an 'early adopter'!

Whatever.

Silverado Systems in Cali - is one of the first rental houses to have them. They dropped their price from $9500 a wekk to $6000 a week, with a 1 week minimum rental.

its INCREDIBLE in low light. i think thats its most interesting capability. it can hit 1200 asa with no visible grain in the image. wit a fast lens, yo ucan practically shoot at night with minimal lighting.
