AUGUST BURNS RED - MUSIC VIDEO (HVX + Mini35)

So that´s what the Backstreet Boys have been up to lately
This video is sooo pro, really you nail that MTV look, people will stop using film hehehe
But this daylight setting for such "angry" music doesn´t sell it for me, they just look ridiculous to me, but that´s just my personal biased opinion, I´ve been into Hardcore music since 1990 and these screamo metal bands just make me puke - but I´m sure many will like the setting oposed to the generic basement/vacant lot/vacant loft locations used in most of this style music vids...
Any background info on the shoot!

we were trying to do something different. we wanted the beautiful daylight setting for the performance to contrast the dark and violent nature of the concept. plus the band has that sort of look - they dress nice, not dressing in all black or whatever like metal bands in the same genre.

I think most people will see it that way!
Again, I´m biased here, because this style of music has become so popular (at least in "indy" circles...) and it uses a lot of elements from a scene that once was totaly oposed to what these todays bands are standing for...
Everything looks so nice and clean, the sun is shining on band made of male models - why are they screaming, what is their anger based on...?
All fake, pop music at its best, my 2c...
This is just a critique on the music and band, the video, I have to repeat, is perfectly executed!
Very cinematic, big budget visuals!

Wow! nice job!. I loved the cut scenes...BEAUTIFUL!. Love the color grading green tint with the headlights yellow.

Could you expand on your lighting setup for both the daytime and nightime shots. Post work etc.

How do you like the Mini35? Did you use Zeiss primes?

Great stuff!

Excellent footage recorded. The night shots look great. The day shots I would like a little less bright, even a gradient in the sky, however, the radical camera tilts would give that away. Where the lens has slight fall off on the sides, and the sky is deeper blue, that is the sky I would like to see overall. Just some personal comments, nothing more.

What shutter speed or range did you use?

Amazing adapter footage!

Sure. the daytime we just used grip gear. we have 2 - 4x4 mirrors on both sides of the performance - see photo here: http://iendeavormedia.com/battery/photos/abr4.jpg - and that is pretty much all we did for the day time, no lights.

the nighttime stuff the setup looked like this: http://iendeavormedia.com/battery/photos/abr3.jpg - we built scafolding in the back
about 15 feet high and put a light up there and then we had a 12x12 silk (i think) and bounced light into it. and then one other light on the other side. i cant remember the exact lights but you can see it in that photo

also in the nighttime shots we had a smoke machine running in the background

as far as color - we did it all in Smoke. Nothing super fancy, just pulling out some colors and contrast from the shots.

we love the mini35 - used the zeiss superspeed lenses. only downside is having to compensate for the loss of light

i think we shot 1/60 but we had ND filters on our lense as well

Thanks for the feedback Danny. If you have enough light, 1/60 or 144 degrees at 24p seems great, less smearing if fast camera moves or talent moving fast. Perhaps the night footage had a slower shutter speed, which looked great. Excellent footage and kit to play with.

Beautifully shot. The best part for me is when you have the lead singer whipping the microphone cord around...wicked cool :)

Just saw the night setup; how many watts was the rear HMI? And for the 12 by, is that an HMI plus a par array setup? Can you detail those lights used? Lastly, what f-stop were u able to shoot at?

Thanks,

Geoff

Great video - the visuals and editing were superb. Too bad the music made me wanna rip of ears off and then beat myself to death with them. Just my purely subjective 2c.

ok i'll try to remember what we had. i actually think we shot all tungsten lighting and color corrected to make that moonlight-like. i honestly cant remember, but if we had any HMI it would have just been the large backlight - but i think we just color corrected to make it look like hmi.

but on the 12 by on the left we had a 9-Light Maxi Brute and i think a 5k. i think the light on the scaffolding was a 10 or 12k.

on the oposite side of the 12 by we had a 6 by and just a small 1k or 2k par bouncing into that.

as far as f-stop, at night we were able to have a little bit to play with because we didnt use the mini35 on the nighttime stuff. and for the daytime, we had alot to play with because we had to even put on ND filters - but the exact numbers i cannot remember

thanks!!

in the opening shot, was the sky a composite? Only because i see the sun is directly behind him however he has no rimm around his jacket or anything. Also it gives the effect of film lattitude having the sky not blown out in the slightest while exposing for his body ( on hte darker side ) for effect.

yes we did a sky replacement and colored the footage accordingly

Very awesome job.
I was looking forward to this since you posted the teaser.
Awesome to see what was accomplished with a simple, but powerful, lighting set up.

nice filming man. i had to mute the music though. loved watching the visuals.

question for you: did you record the guy in the beginning that's being chased from the car at 60fps and then ramp up the speed in AE or FCP or are those just different takes recorded in slow mo and regular speed?
