Jamie Jones - RISE - Music Video - HVX/M2 Nikon

Very nice video. Like the message.. so refreshing to see something positive in a vid. Thought that was Wayne Brady.. cool. I like how it built up and keep rolling and the story camer around at the end. Was a bit slow and stilted in the begining.. but not a criticsm as it came up in tempo and impact as you moved along..

good job.. what's the plans for the vid now? I've done a few Christian pieces myself and always interesting to see where it leads..

CONGRATS!

nice looking video, good song, good concept in the video. Excellent camera work too. I like it alot dude, great job! Plus, you got to work with Wayne Brady! LOL, I love that dudes work!

Excellent job, Geoff!
Did you do the "technical part" all by yourself or did you have a small crew?
Also the actors were really good, every emotion was believable, not too much, not too less... If I could only believe in god now...
So you were aways around 2.8 with the Iris? Did you just focus with the SWIT?
Anyway, perfectly executed, I can see why you got so many follow ups!

We had a small crew, Reign Shaw directed, Wes Carrasquillo gaffed and we had one grip. On the day we shot the club scene with the choir, we had two grips to help out with lighting. We didn't have much need for more than that since we were dealing with a relatively small lighting package. I would have preferred to have an AC helping me with camera but the budget didn't have room for it.

The 135mm, 35mm, and 24mm nikons were all 2.8 lens so for any scenes that might require their use, I needed to light for at least 2.8. I have a 50mm 1.4 lens which allows for less light and on some scenes all I did use was the 50 so it was fine if the light level was at 1.4. For most scenes, I tried to set key light levels at 2.8 minimum so we had the ability to use whichever lens we wanted. For interiors I almost had to stick at 2.8 due to a small light package but for exteriors I'd have the iris at a 4/5.6.

Focus was always off the SWIT monitor, exposure always off the HVX EVF.

3 questions:

1. How did you power all those lights, you just used different circuits? Or you had a generator if so which one?

2. You mentioned you had to light for the right fstop what do you mean?

3. What exactly do you mean the red rock's glass was spinning (trying to focus?)
I know it's a spinning ground glass device, but how did that affect your work?

No generators on set. Different circuits for most lights and we ran into power issues of course... It's usually best to just run your lights off a genny if possible, it removes a lot of hassle and stress. We constantly tripped power at the club which set us back a few hours on wrap.

Lighting for the f-stop... basically, you're lighting a set for light levels (fstop) which will allow you to use certain lenses properly. As 'light level' itself, a set might contain 'x' amount of light; if I were to say a set/room is lit to 1.4, it means I could use my 50mm 1.4 lens and things would be good. It wouldn't be too dark to shoot. But if that room stays lit to 1.4 and then I try to use my 24mm 2.8 lens, it'll probably be dark to use. A room lit to 1.4 will be a lot less bright than a room lit to 5.6. Hope that makes sense. *Also, you don't want to light a room to the minimum f-stop of your lens because that'll force you to shoot wide open and you'll have a harder time getting proper focus.

With the redrock, the spinning of the disc is hard to perfect. Sometimes there is a slight 1% or so wobble...like when shooting directly into a light, even at such a small degree, it's often noticeable. Also, something I can't explain... but on my model I can sometimes see a faint circular line that is traced near the edges of a frame when shooting 16:9. I'm not sure why this occurs but since I shoot most of our projects in 2:35, it's not a huge issue because I lose that portion of the image during the crop.

Not sure where it's headed but I believe it'll be on VH1 and TBN sometime soon. Fingers crossed :)

I am sorry I think someone else mentioned it. Was that WAYNE BRADY?

I loved his episode in the chapelle show.

loved the video by the way. curious if it was your intention for the amount of vigneting shown.

Yes, that is Wayne. What do you mean regarding the vignetting? In the beginning, yes it was intentional but are you seeing a lot of vignetting outside from that? If so, where?
