Schneider Tru Pol & BHphotoVideo

So I ordered a bunch of stuff from B&H last week - among which was a Schneider True-Polarizing 82mm Filter. Got my confirmation email, etc, everything was fine.

Today I suddenly get a confirmation email for ANOTHER polarizer (different brand).
So I call B&H to see what happened - seeing as I just got an order confirmation for something I didn't order. They tell me the Schneider was discontinued and that they were sending me another one instead, and they credited me the difference in price.

Alright - first off, if something is discontinued you should probably let me know instead of just sending me something else.
That rubbed me the wrong way. BUT - nothing I can do about that now.
I had them cancel both orders and credit me back the money.

I've heard such good things about the Schneider that I really wanted to get my hands on one.
SO - the question now is - anyone know where I can get a Schneider 82mm Tru Pol?
Thanks.

B&H now shows an http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produ...ular_True_Polarizing.html82mm circular TruPol for $346.50

The one I ordered was $149.50 (linear, not circular)
It's no longer listed on their site.

Damn - just looked at Adorama (because someone suggested they might have it in another thread) and it also says "this item currently not in stock"

Oh well.

Try calling The Filter Connection (800-882-2832 / www.2filter.com) on Tuesday. Unfortunately you can't go by what their website shows to determine whether they carry a particular item or whether it is in stock, but they can give you the straight dope on the Tru-Pol CP.

Which pola are they offering you? because as I understand it Schneider brands their screw on filters as B+W, so if its a B+W pola it might be the same filter.

There is a B+W linear filter that they offer - but its not the same one as far as I can tell.
The one I was looking for was the Tru Pol made of 'water white glass'

The only one I found at B&H made of that same glass is the circular...which costs nearly $350.

We're sorry for the difficulty and confusion and you're probably right -- we should have asked first. That said, both our buyers and B+W tell us the less expensive B+W filter we'd intended to send you is the exact same item. Only the brand's name differs.

Hey henry - thanks for posting!
Sorry I didn't see it until now.

From what I've seen - the B+W filter is not exactly the same.
Looking at Schneider's catalog they make a distinction between the two.

The good news is - I was just doing some searching on the B&H website and ran across a B+W filter I hadn't seen before.

This is closer to the Schneider branded filter I was looking for as far as I can tell
While it's the closest I've seen in construction to the Schneider - it's still not the same.

This is the filter that was ordered as the replacement

In the end - I"m sure it doesn't matter so much.
Its just a bit annoying when you take your time, do your research, decide on a model - then find out the company discontinued it.
:)

Todd - Yeah, they still make the 4x4, but I was looking for the 82mm screw in model which apparently they discontinued.

Maybe this is finally my excuse for biting the bullet and getting a matte box?
:)

From what I've seen - the B+W filter is not exactly the same. Looking at Schneider's catalog they make a distinction between the two.

I asked our web guys to check so we could update the B+W entry if necessary. We got this from Schneider optics:

B+W filters are manufactured in Germany, Schneider branded filters are made here on Long Island.

The Schneider filters are part of our MPTV division (Motion Picture TeleVision) and are geared toward that market with regards to color content (Day for Night, etc.) and sizing (Panavision size, 3x3, 4x4, etc.) Where the broadcast size coincided with a common photo size, such as 58mm, 72mm, etc, MPTV sells the B+W product, but where there is no B+W size to fulfill an industry need, the Schneider Tru Pol is produced.

They are made out of the same optical quality, water white glass although I believe the Schneider filters use Aluminum rings as opposed to Brass.

Hope this helps.

Absolutely that helps.
I've tried contacting Schneider myself and haven't heard back from them.
Thanks for taking the time to do that, I greatly appreciate it.

If they are in fact made out of the same water white glass - you may want to think about adding that into your B+W listings on the site. At the moment they are listed simply as "Schott Glass"

Alright - I'm off to browse through the B&H site...again.
:)
