SCENE FILE X-CHANGE test site is up...

here is something i cobbled together in about 30 min this evening. thought i'd run it by you all to see what the general consensus was.

http://understandinc.com/hvx_scenes.html

there are only two scene files (from the panasonic website) in it right now for testing purposes as i didnt want to kill myself building things if it turned out nobody gives a crap ; )

basic download functionality is working. if you'd like to upload your content please click the contact button above to email me your file, your name, a screen grab (no less than 250 pix wide) and a short description of the file and i will post it to the appropriate section. if this site proves worthy, automated upload, file ratings and search features will be added.

the site is broken down into 3 categories:
1. feature/cinematic - to simulate film looks
2. effect/stylized - for more esoteric or experimental looks
3. post production prep. - for things like chromakey settings

any feedback is greatly appreciated - even if its to say "hey, this design blows!" or "duh, someone's already done this..."
cheers - wayne

hey I like the site man, but you need to add more details on the settings, "detail off" may mean 0 for someone and in the negatives for me, I think you should make it as easy as possible to read, but I really like it and have taken intrest, keep it up man

24fps

Great idea this.
I like the idea of a description for each one, but I think the settings should be laid down list style, very much as the scene file itself is for ease of browsing and comparing.

Also being able to view a larger pic by clicking on the thumbnail would be good.

Might also be an idea to have a common downloadable test image, so all the browse pics are the same, much as we have the kodak 'marcie' in post-production.

good work

oh yeah. larger image is an easy one. i should have included that in the intro...
and yeah, im thinking that a spec for spec matrix would be very handy!

im not sure how a common test image would work? do you mean a standard "uneffected" image or clip that everyone can apply their settings to the re-upload? neat idea but im not sure how that would go over...? we'll see what folks say

Hmmm, I was thinking over what I said there. This is where the previously mentioned 'scene file editor' would come in I guess, with a common raw, unaffected image that the settings would be applied to.

But unless there was a controlled environment where a printed out image (and here it gets complicated, as it would have to be same lighting, inks, paper etc) was filmed with new settings, then this wouldn't work.

Would this be something you could do, ie have a common image in a room at your place, controlled lighting, tripod marks etc., that you could do a frame grab from for the browse pics/sample image for each scene file?

One suggestion: The colors on the site are pretty muted already but you might consider pushing them all into gray scale like some NLE's so you can see the colors of the scene file best.

I think this is a great idea. Thanks to wgzn for putting it up. Just one note--the test scene files are for the SDX900 and aren't going to make a whole lot of sense to us HVX users.

This is a great idea, just on that test site alone it looks very promising. Can't wait to see the final site.

You have a great idea can't wait to see how your site expands! I also agree maybe a click on larger image would really help. How is your hit count doing?

Excellent job. Thanks for doing it. I hope something like this can actually survive this time. There have been attempts, threads, and even a sub-forum in the past, but people always seem reluctant to share their scene files.... I understand their reasoning, but don't agree with it personally. Especially with the amount of sharing folks like BG have done on this site over the years.

For now, you get a sticky

I hope it succeeds. I will definitely try to submit some stuff when I feel I have something of worth to submit.

The biggest problem I see is the need for having a consistent test scene to evaluate the results from the scene files. Another problem is that scene files are often for specific conditions and may not be appropriate to the test scene.

Anyway, I'm still hopeful and positive about this, I hope the site succeeds.

ha! great point kevin! i guess in my haste i didnt pay attention to what i was copying from panasonic, i just took the most obvious google result and ran with it.

seems as though there is enough interest to progress. so ill be taking care of things like this in short order - stay tuned ; )

another good point JDS. i had chosen the neutral colors as not to conflict with the images. but i suppose gray scale might be even better.

will get on that suggestion! thanx!

ok, i'll be building prototype v2 of the site (with clickable enlarged pics and matrix specs) tonight or tomorrow. do any of you fine folk have some scene files that you'd like to add? i cant seem to come across any just floating around publicly out there.

Wow thats cool. You should make directory sections for each poster. So like if I signed up I would have a subsection with all my settings and screenshots. This way if there is a favorite person someone likes they can find their settings easier. And maybe a most downloaded or favorites on the front page.

super suggestion beat! and that is indeed in my plan. based on the feedback im getting, i have been contemplating adding such functionality.

i do though have to admit. im a little bit leery about the willingness of the community to PROVIDE settings. in well over 200 views of this thread (and more of the site itself) NOBODY has sent me emails with files... everyone wants to see them, but unless we can get folks to cough some up its gonna be a very empty one way conversation.

i have the new grayscale interface built and am about to build the actual pages. keep tuned this evening and into tomorrow for functional updates...

and somebody, ANYBODY - PLEASE send me some scene files!!!!!!!

Fantastic -

As far as the images go... it seems like there is no real way of having everyone use the same image - though you could put some parameters on what the sample image should be.

But seeing as we can't all shoot the same thing under the same exact lighting conditions - why not have each scene uploaded with an image showing the scene file, and showing the same shot with the factory defaults?

That should give people a good idea of what the settings are doing.
Just a thought.

well, we have to keep in mind that this is a situation of "creative interpretation"

to my knowledge, there isnt a simple way to import a clip into your camera, apply settings to it and save it back out. so the whole idea of a common clip is more or less a dead-issue IMO...

were going to have to accept that the exchange is a trial and error situation. kind of like downloading trial apps for a treo or (god forbid) sucking things down from a p2p network - download it for free. if it doesnt suit you, delete it.

as things progress, that situation might change. but for now i think were going to have to accept that this is a clearing house for free tools and there are certain pluses and minuses that go with that...

stay tuned for version2. its WAY better - but i still NEED SOME SCENE FILES!!!!!!
