Music Video (HVX) - Blessthefall

The video is fan-bloody-tastic!!! The HVX is a brilliant camera, and combined with a brilliant filmmaker it's breathtaking. Makes me want to go out and shoot something (video... not bullets!)

Standing Ovation!!! Well done!!!!

Ok. I have a question too...

How did you design/storyboard the video. Did the band say, "Here's the music, do your damndest." Or was it a case of the band approaching you with a vague idea and everyone spitballed until the video was done? What was the vibe like between everyone?

I'm interested because I work a lot with various artists, dance/music mostly - sometimes it just sails smoothly, and other times it can become a tug of war of ideas - it's so interesting to see someone elses work come together so fantastically well, and when it happens I like to find out how.

Thanks.

you know your trade well, shooting 720p with so much motion... Was it much of a hassle to avoid the 'strobing effect' of the progressive mode? The vid looks very smooth, my pans and tilts look awfull when shooting 25p...

the band/label apprached us to write a treatment and we did and they picked us to shoot the video for the budget that they had. from that point we developed our idea in pre-production and geared up for the shoot.

as far as the edit, there was a little bit of stress as everyone had different ideas going into it as what it would look like, but we finished and what you saw is the final product

INcredible Video

Absolutely love it.

Sold the song. Love to see the HVX on it's own. Even though I have an adaptor, sometimes the clarity of a naked HVX looks so right. You nailed it.

Woah!
Yeah. That was great!
Really nice story - it almost made me cry - you really nailed it insofar as offering a really haunting yet touching tone.
Looks great too. I love the choice of locations.

sweet.

(good job we're not here to criticise the music ;) )

Awesome video! I've played it so many times that the music isn't bothering me anymore. I'm kinda diggin' it now. You did an awesome job with this video.

Quick question. I went to the endeavor website, and went through all your videos, which are extremely well done, so props to all involved. I was wondering about a certain effect in your Project 86 - My Will Be a Deadman video. Towards the beginning of the vid, when the singer is in the bathroom at the sink, there are several shots where the image...how do I say this...I guess it streaks the light vertically...if that makes sense. How was this accomplished? I've been wondering for friggin' ever.

oh wow, you're taking us back a long time there. its been a long time since i even watched that video.

we probably did a few things to it - we really messed with the images in that scene. we made multiple layers and keyed out certain things and cropped stuff and used different blend modes. the streaks were probably a filter that we animated with key frames. i believe one of the filters we used was actually called "STREAKS" but i really can't be for sure because it was so long ago.

thanks so much though! i'm glad you enjoyed our work

un friggen real, great camera work, nice story,

how did u composite the sky?

u do the "colorama" feature to make it all black and white and key out the white? or u just key the blue? (sky)

Hey all, I don't want to give away too many of Dan & Steve's tricks but I did the finishing and effects on Bless the Fall and can help a little with some of your questions.

The effects and finishing are all done on Autodesk/Discreet Smoke, Flame & 3DS Max. The sky replacements were done using luminance keys & bezier garbage masks. I found that trying to key the color created more noise than was acceptable, an unfortunate side effect of the HD-DVC Pro Codec. It's gets fairly blocky pretty quickly.

The dust particles you see in the "breakout" sequence are all from 3DS Max. I was worried maybe there was too many, but maybe they were just right!

Later,
Allan
