Hi everyone!

Just came back from day 1 of shooting my short film. It's about a kid in 1999 who discovers the Y2K bug. (Literally, we have a CG animated bug).

Here are some grabs.

We had a fun shoot, we have an animator doing a bug at the moment, it'll be fun to see what our CG shots look like...More coming soon!

Just some info on the film...is a 0 budget 5 minute flick for a local competition. All the cast & crew were 18 or under. We shot it in a day and a bit. We had a few work lights to work with. Things came together pretty well, though some shots I would have liked to shoot again.

Learning as I go, this was my first short with more than me behind the camera, it was interesting. More people on set (even if just a few) adds more pressure to get things done quickly especially if everyone is working for free.

The whole process was a very interesting one. We auditioned the two main actors, and that was fun. People took it pretty seriously for a no-budget short and it was great to see.

Organization is absolute key. I think I could've organized the set a bit better, we had a few actors sitting around for a bit too long at some points I felt. After every short I make, I feel a little depressed for a while, then I watch it, look at what I did wrong and move on. I'm really eager to get into a new project now...It's amazing what you can take from one project.

I'm waiting to see the bug! I'm also curious about the things to do list in the 4th picture. What does it say? The only one I can make out is "Get Milk".

Haha.

It says:

"Get milk, Watch f.r.i.e.n.d.s, get new gfx card and get tapes"

This scene is the scene where the Y2K bug spreads, and we see it crawling into the repair guys PC case. During the scene he gets a call, and the focus turns to the PC case as the roach crawls in, dramatic music takes over and the guys voice is taken over by the music.

In the longer cut, we have the guy on the other end ask about his computer, and he says how it's on the top of his priority list (it cuts to a close up of the board). It was really funny how the actor said it, moving his light helmet etc.. it was something he improved when we shot it, but unfortunately can't fit it in the 5 minutes. It's not really essential for the story but he said some funny stuff that wasn't in the script.

As for the roach, I get the final renders tomorrow and I'll post some clips up. It's a fairly cartoony roach with a bit of realism - our poor modeler only had a few days to model and animate, but it looks really cool for the time we gave him.

Heh looks pretty interesting...reminds me of the karate kid films for some weird reason...Not sure why

Funny you should say that! The karate kid popped into my head several times during shooting this for no reason at all. I haven't seen those films in years...freaky!
