Help a NooB build a kit

So, I've been a lurker for a long time on this site. I've finally decided to take the plunge and get myself a camera and a kit that would compliment it well. I don't have the hugest of budgets (since I'm going to be using this as my foray into film/visual fx / motion graphics), but I have around $3k-$3.5k to spend. I wanted to get your opinion on the kit I'm thinking about buying if you'd be so kind. Stuff I don't need or things I should add.
  • DVX-100a (gently used)
  • 72mm Tiffen Linear Polarizing Glass Filter
  • Bogen / Manfrotto Pro Video Kit w/351MVB2 Aluminum Tripod Legs, 501 Pro Fluid Head, 75mm Half Ball, Spreader, Shoes & MBAG90P Padded Case
  • Camera Case (hard or soft?)
  • Gaffers Tape
  • DV Tapes (what kind should I get?)
  • A Mic for a boom pole (no clue here)
Thanks a lot in advance for your help!

What exactly are you hoping to do with all this? What about software? Search the forums for the shotgun microphone question. That has been asked plenty of time. I would stay panasonic tapes all the way. I am using AY-DVM63PQ 63s. Camera case: are you traveling alot? have kids? living in a theft area? go with the hard case. I have a pelican case that I can secure in my car/house with a bike cable and lock. Just my thoughts. Have fun.

I love soft cases. I have a Kata bag and nothing has ever been damaged in it. Pelican cases are indestructible, but i like the format of a soft case.

Panasonic tapes are tip top.

Go to the audio section for mic recommendations. I have an AT-4073a ind it rocks, but is more expensive then some other choices. As said above, make sure to factor in software.

I'm going to be doing a lot of different stuff. I'm an aspiring vfx artist / motion graphics artist / director, so a little of everything. Commercials, music videos, short films...whatever. There are a few personal projects I have in mind for it, but hopefully I can put it all together on a demo reel and get some work eventually.

What about software?
I've been doing mograph and vfx for awhlie now. Software isn't a prob. I use FCP, AE, Maya, etc...I've got the software, but now I'm stepping into working with footage I've shot myself.

Even though the lights are lacking I think your list of stuff is good for now with your budget.

I always find a wide angle adapter to be oh so useful.

As for a mic... I like the Rode NTG2 - it's cheap(ish) and sounds decent.
