Planet 4 - My Vintage Future (Music Video)

Very nice! Great look, and tight editing. Did you use a 35mm adapter? If so, which one. Good song too!

The more I see footage from the HVX the more I like it (i'm shooting a feature this fall and am still in the process of choosing a camera).

Any reason why you chose to shoot 720p as opposed to 1080 24p? Was the decision due to the space available on the P2 card? I've heard mixed stories of what is the better choice. I know there is approx. 20% or more resolution when going 1080, but I have to admit that every piece I've seen at 720p (including yours) looks fantastic.

Great job.

Todd

We did not use a 35mm adapter. I don't really feel that you NEED it.

I shot 720p just because I'm not entirely sold on 1080p yet. It doesn't seem like it's worth it quality-wise to deal with such big files. But it's mostly because I only have one 4 gig card. :)

It just didn't seem necessary to shoot 1080 for this. I had never worked with HD before so I figured I'd keep it fairly simple. It is a great camera, though.

Looks great though i wish i didn't see the band. The song is run-of-the-mill so it's important that you stay away from run-of-the-mill coverage. I was totaly into your video with an exciting opening and all but when the band popped up i went back to "...oh wait i'm watching just a video for a silly band."

Heh, that's the curse of a band that wants their 'image' to be seen. If my opening 'excited' you than I will take that as the compliment since that's where most my efforts went. Making an interesting looking intro and whatnot.

I want to get away from performance stuff...make something crazy wacky.

Rock and roll DOES pay! Nice work, man. Looked like a lot of effort: multiple locations (and one's a junkyard [clever]), jib arm, night shoot (that must have been a long day), and a lot of syncing to playback. Seems like your on-camera talent was happy to be there too. For some reason I felt like the video should be a little "messier." By that I mean jump-cuts, out of focus here and there, maybe some color correction, as was suggested by janusz.

The CC was done by my DP, he did the best with the footage that he could, I think. The pawn shop stuff was very 'white', so he gave it a little more contrast.

And it's not a very fast song, so I didn't want to cut it fast. I could have, I mean, if you give it to another editor and let them cut it with all the footage I have, it would be entirely different...perhaps even better. But I like the slow, almost methodical pace of it.

Thanks Brandon for the info. Yeah, I've been debating the 1080 vs 720p thing myself. I plan on doing tests once I get the HVX and watch them on a 90" HD screen to see if I can tell the difference (played from the camera of course). Thanks again.

Todd

I'm sure you'll see a bit of a difference, since there is more res there...but it's not shooting a TRUE 1080p ...so it doesn't seem worth it.

I don't even think Much Music and whatnot play anything in HD...so yah. It doesn't seem to matter much for what I was doing.

But I'm doing a short some time soon, and I will likely shoot 1080.

it's pretty good, but i think you can get more aggressive with the cc and grade.

i think the CC and grade looks good. I think people go crazy with the CC. i like it more subdued.

it is a true 1080p, its just not a good combo of prefilters, and Codec rasterizing. the image gets cut down mid stride, and loses its oomph in the DSP. The HPX 500 probably has better implimentaion, despite teh identical pixel count.

Tim,

What's your preference... 1080 or 720p? To be honest I haven't seen a lot of footage of the HVX in 1080, but I have seen a lot of 720p. I know Barry Green states that you should always shoot 1080 if you think the image will be blown up (most of us hope that's the case, but rarely is...).

I really like what I've seen at 720 (including Brandon's footage) but I guess I'll have to try both and see what I get.

Really? I'm sorry if I was mistaken.

I always heard it was something-something pixel shift and not true 1920x1080.

But what do I know? I'm an idiot.

Sometime ago someone posted some grabs with a page of an open book in 720 and 1080 with compression comparison -- that still shot alone sold me on 1080. Whenever i'm working with this camera i use 720 for logistics reason BUT 1080 is superior.

Well i am lucky enough to have gotten a great deal on a 60'' 1080P SXRD Sony TV.

The problem with monitoring and comparing HD footage is that most people watch either on a smaller HD screen like a 40" or a computer monitor. The benefits of 1080p dont come out until you watch it on a large screen, or see it projected in a theatre. The HVX 1080p, while yes, is not as sharp as the 1080p from a Cinealta, is ALOT sharper looking, cleaner, crisper and seems more natural and less edge enhanced than the 720p. ( and mind you the 720p looks great, but alot of folks dont use the 1080, they dont know what they are missing) It just carries alot more detial.

:) noone is calling you an idiot. The 1080p acquisition is done through pixel shifting, but thats ok, its a real way of determining resolution and not a "trick". ITs not the best way to get 1080 in the world, but in a 1/3 inch camera its a neccesary technique to deliver the 1080 image while, maintaining the sensitivity we love from the small cameras. if the HVX had 1920x1080 chips, it would probably be like 4 stops slower than it is and Noisier. Believe me panasonic did us a favor by going this route. Its the most light sensitive of the small ( and most of the big ) Hd cameras. The Varicam has a 160 ASA rating, a full stop slower than the HVX. Same goes for the Cinealta F900/950's. I saw a article somewhere where they did a speed rating on all the cameras. Surprisingly the HVX200 was ontop. As of right now the HPX500 is probably the fastest.

As far as that text thing goes, im with patryk, the compression in 1080 is VERY mild looking in comparison. Barry had a theory why, and it was something like, the detail saturated 720 frame is struggling to represent all the detail, where as the not quite detail saturated 1080p frame isnt in the same boat, and the DSP can make prettier less digital looking compression artifacting.

Nice shoot

Nice shoot

Hi,

I just wanted to chime in and say - Hey, nice shoot.

I thought the vid looked great. Really nice and clean.
The production was great - I'm impressed with the footage of the junk yard. Not something you get to see every day.

I'm keeping a close eye on this board because I'm getting close to being able to upgrade to an HVX200 - hopefully next month, so it's interesting for me to see what people are doing with them.

Did the vid have much of a budget?

nice one :)

Thanks everyone for the info about 1080 vs 720p! Sorry for taking the thread off topic a bit.

Well, if Brandon's video looks so great at 720p, I can't wait to shoot in 1080! It's good to hear about the lower rez sensors allowing better shooting in darker environments (I own a V1U, Z1U, and FX1 for event video, but I'm looking for a feature film camera)

Todd

The budget was very small, it ended up being $2600.

Considering the price, I think they got a good product.
