This American Life is brilliant. Ira Glass is a master at finding the moment in a story that makes us feel human. If you are going to buy one of the episodes on Itunes (and they are only a buck) have it be the one called "babysitting," The third act is incredible.

This American Life is easily the best radio I've ever heard - my wife and I never miss it.
And yeah, "Babysitting" is a great episode.

"Jobs that take over your life" is another favorite

It's great because you can subscribe to the weekly episode for free and then grab others for a buck. I must have 100 or so downloaded.

a few more:
The Super
24 hours at the Golden Apple
Didn't Ask to be Born
Guns
Monagomy
The Sanctity of Marriage
What I SHould Have Said.

I'll grab "Jobs that Take Over Your Like," not sure if I have heard that one.

Actually - I don't remember the rest of the episode off hand, but Matt Malloy does a fantastic reading of a short story called "Orientation" in the third act of that episode that is hilarious. Its one of those things full of lines that my wife and I still quote to this day....

"He is in fact our fastest typist. He types as if he were on fire."
Good stuff.

Other favorites of mine are:
'Starting from Scratch' (great story about a limo driver who is a compulsive gambler)
'Fiasco' - wiht the classic Peter Pan story...if you haven't heard that one you really need to, absolutely hysterical.
'First Days' - this one has 'Squirrel Cop' on it, which is another great story about a cops first day on the job.
'24 Hours at the Golden Apple' - we actually have a paint by number hanging in our living room inspried by that episode.
:)

Yeah - I said paint by number..... I guess we're really die hard fans.

When I was in Chicago recently I was going to go find the Golden Apple, grab a turkey club or something, but I had a late night and then had to leave. i own the other ones you mentioned and they are great picks.

One last one:
Telephone: first act is about a father who taps the phone of his drug taking teen son. The son realizes and then cat and mouse ensues.

Absolutely - that's a great one as well!
They put that on one of the CD sets they put out "Crime Busters and Crossed Wires"
Which also has the 'Greatest Answering Message of all time" on it.
:)

Yeah - I've told all my filmmaking friends about this american life.
It's amazing how a radio show can teach you so much about a visual medium - then again, at the root of it all its storytelling.

I absolutely LOVE Ira Glass...I have been listening to his show for years. He is a master of the breezy Sunday morning type chat...great to sit back, relax and drink coffee to. His interview style is genius. He can make what might seem like a non-story into something very interesting...and he is incredibly perceptive. Also, I was first exposed to David Sedaris (my favorite humorist) while listening to his show.

Last March, David Sedaris was doing a live reading at the Bardavon and a book signing before...during the signing I was telling him that Ira Glass is my absolute favorite Radio host...so he signed my book...

"To Rick, Vice President of the Ira Glass Fan Club-David."

When I was working at a radio station years ago David Sedaris came through on a book tour. One of the hosts had him on for an interview, and I was able to meet him when he came in - I asked if he would mind signing my copy of "Me Talk Pretty One Day"

He wrote:

To Luis,
Everyone thinks you're gay.
David Sedaris

I thought it was hilarious....
then a few weeks later I saw a friend who went to the book signing.
I opened up his book, and saw he'd written the same exact thing.

Suddenly, everyone thinking I was gay didn't feel special anymore.
:)

Sedaris kills me. Have you ever heard him tell the story of the barbecue where he goes to the bathroom and there is something there he considers throwing out the window? Hilarious.

No. You know what book its in because I have 3 of them.

One of my favorites was the story about how some mystery family member was using the fudge colored towels to wipe their bum. And nearly everyone had accidentally reached for the towel, fresh out of the shower. And, eventually, his mother switched to white towels and the phantom "$hitter" stopped. At the time, they never found out who it was.

I asked him about that at the signing, he leaned it and said "it was my grandmother". I'm guessing it was Ya-Ya.

I dig the radio show, but the one feature I worked on, based off an installment of TAL, was an unqualified disaster.

David Sedaris is hysterical. I still listen to his reading "Holidays on Ice" every Christmas...

...and Amy is in our movie.
