my new 35 footage

finally got my lens yesterday and had already assembled the rest of the adapter. here's some really basic rack focus stuff. the adapter was built like the my35. consists of 2 asian 10x macros, optosigma 1500 grit GG, and a canon FD 50mm 1.4 lens. of course there are rings and spacers in between. i bought all the parts on ebay except the GG which i ordered from optosigma.

works great!!!

Looks good cheez...has a sharplook to it. Question for you.....
the optosigma 1500 grit GG fits into what size filter ring?
Is the GG pretty scratch resistant or you have to handle with care?

Wow! Looks really good man!! Especially for using the optosigma GG. did you use a condenser too? Can you give us some more details on your GG/condenser setup? I'm familiar with the my35 layout.

Also, I am noticing some hefty chromatic aberration on some edges. One example, the tree in the background in the first shot. Also, did you CC the first two shots or no?

it has lotsa chroma abbrasion problems, and is really soft near the edges. Keep working, it will improve.

where do i start? i have no idea on how to fix that. not sure i even know what it is actually.

for me this adapter will not be used all the time. i love the DOF but the grain sucks if i'm going for something clean. so i guess for the type of shots i will use this on, the imperfections kinda go with the look.

the glass is 50mm. it fit loosely into a 52mm filter ring with the glass removed. however, i ended up just mounting it in the big 58mm spacer ring with gaff tape. you zoom into it so much that you never see the edges anyway. i did this as a way to temp hold it while i figured out the position but it's holding well so i just left it like that.

no condenser. what is that exactly. i've heard that mentioned before...

the gg is mounted at the very back end of the big spacer ring right next to the first macro. etched side facing the dvx.

Well basically this means use expensive optics. Like if youre using a 50$ Acromat diopeter so the camera can focus on the GG, use a 100$ one instead. one that has better optics.

Or your GG for example. Try a different matarial. try adjusting howfar the GG is from the Lens. you know..... experiment.

it's pretty tough. i actually dropped it on my hardwood floor and it got really dirty during construction. i cleaned it with microfiber and lens fluid and all good.

It's the frosted side that faces the camera. I've tried the optosigma before. You have to be very careful with this glass, it can be easily scratched and the oil off your finger will be very hard to remove from the surface. By the way nice job!

A condenser basically focuses the light more and sharpens up your image. I'd definitely recommend using one.

Like x2mag68 said, you need better optics to get rid of the chromatic aberration. It doesn't sound like you're using an achromat (just a regular macro from your description). An achromat will definitely cut down on the aberration and help clean things up. If you need more info on that please let us know. Like others have said, it looks like a great start.

yeah, this is definitely a quick, cheap build. cheap asian brand macros from ebay. optosigma gg, etc.

thanks for the advice.

OK, so where do you go to get an achromat lens (Edmunds? Surplus Shed?) and how do you know what to order. They list their lenses according to focal length, so how does a 100mm fl lens relate to a +10 diopter?

I'm not really sure to tell you the truth. I've heard different things but someone else will have to tell you that exactly. I have yet to build my own (couple parts still on the way) but I know that an achromat will cut down the chromatic aberration. I believe Quyen uses an achromat for the Letus35. If he steps in to comment (or if anyone can answer the question about the focal length comparison) that should help.

This is probably THE BEST 35mm adapter DIY footage I have every seen, ever! Seriuosly everything is great!

Do you have any plans, or would you consider building one for a price?

Btw, do you have a link to the Optosigma GG? I went to the website but it's pretty confusing.

Then you probably havent seen the guskers 35, my 35, Homedepot 35 and to some extent the sg35. (not really a DIY, but Wayne Kinney made the first prototype by hand) these are all technichally better. Alot of these adapters started as pet projects then grew into production.

Itrs just that Cheez is a talented cinematographer, and is good at hiding the flaws of the machine, with exciting composition and visually interesting CC. ( you should see his other work) but from a technichal standpoint the images were of poor "technichal quality". The edges were suffereing from alot of Resoluton loss, there was purple and blue fringes on alot of the high contrast edges and there was grain.

But i firmly believe if enough money is thrown at building an adapter, it can look pretty damn good.

yeah, i really put very little effort into building this adapter and only spent $120 including the lens. other than attaching the lens mount and the gg, the thing is just a bunch of filter rings and macros screwed together. honestly, now that i have made one i could easily build another in 10 minutes provided all the parts were right in front of me. however, i will not be building and selling these. i have no desire to get in the race to build the best adapter. there are enough brilliant people on this forum making great progress with these things every day. i plan to buy one at some point but it will probably be a moving gg type unless this wax thing really is close to grainless.

i only built this quickie because i found the my35 design and it looked so simple to build. allthough it has it's technical flaws, the DOF is awesome and i think anybody that isn't educated on all these things (myself included) will think it looks great for what it is. i will definitely get some good use out of it and hopefully get used to focusing manually all the time so that when i finally get myself a "good" adapter, i will be ready to rock it.

btw, the upside down thing sucks ass. it was driving me nuts. i did the magnet trick and it works perfect. i was worried about the magnetic field screwing with tapes, etc. but i found this alnico magnet at my local hardware store that is only magnetic on one end. perfect.

the magnet on the LCD wont dammage the tape. It has to be an EXTRAORDINARILY strong rare earth magnet to cause problems. and you dont need that much power to fool thje LCD.
