HVX footage & Monitoring

I have a question pertaining to the HVX footage and Final Cut Pro.

I am looking into getting a Black Magic card for my G5 so that i can properly monitor the footage on a broadcast monitor. The monitor I am looking to get does not have a 16:9 feature, but i was curious....

Do you need that option on the monitor? If i hook up the monitor, will final cut automatically recognize that it should be 16:9 and letterbox the footage on the monitor, or will it squeeze the footage to fill the screen 4:3?

Thanks!

im not looking for an HD monitor. the SD black magic card can downconvert to an SD monitor in real time. i just am curious about the 16:9 deal
thanks

I have a Decklink HD Extreme and a JVC 17" monitor with the component board and the real-time down conversion works fantastic.
You see the HD footage in 16:9 inside the NTSC 4:3 screen with black bars at the bottom and top.

does your monitor have the option for 16:9 or not on the monitor or in the menu?

i've been looking for this answer for the past 3 times searching this site. thank you for answering my question. I am understanding that the Black Magic card will downconvert the HD to SD and letterbox it for playback on a 4:3 SD monitor
..

this will help tremendously for color grading.

Hi Pablo:

I have a Aja Kona 3 and it does the same thing, it's nice. Just beware that if you color correct HD footage in NTSC, it will look wrong when the HD footage is viewed on an HD monitor. NTSC/PAL use a completely different color space than HD.

Best,

Dan
