Fear Teaser

I'm working on a new short film for a local festival.
Tentatively titled: FEAR

The premise is that of a salesman who comes across a fairly secluded house. A house he has seen off the highway many times, but he has never been able to catch anyone at home.

On this day he gets more than he bargained for.

I'll be posting screen captures and looking for CC advice once we get rolling.
The film will be approximately 5 minutes in length.

It is to be completed by August.

Cheers,

Mike

Here are some frame grabs from HV20 footage during a location shoot.
No lighting other than two dangling light bulbs in opposite ends of the room.

I think it's creepy enough!

Guys, I need some advice. I'm thinking of going for a "look" with the serial killer in my movie. Should I? Or should I just make him look like a slightly rougher version of himself?

Zodiak had a look, but most serial killers don't.

The guy in my movie does make an abduction during the day, should I work on a disguise of some sort? Some sort of mask maybe...

Open to suggestions.

Mike

Kyser they're really hard questions to answer without seeing the script. I'd be happy to comment after reading. If you want pm me.

I've read the script and I say: don't try to create a look. You'd expect a scary-looking character to be scary, but it's chilling when a normal looking person turns out to be a monster.

Those are some creepy basement shots.

I'm not sure about the look for the killer character. It depends on the actor and how he is motivated. It's just as much of a cliche to make the guy NOT look like a serial killer than it is to make him look like a stereotypical scary serial killer. Make his look out of genuine motivation.

I say it depends on where you want to take the character. Jack Nicholson certainly had a "look" in "The Shining." But it has to be done right. Kubrick and Nicholson "did" it right. Then again, Jack is an amazing actor, so it takes a good amount of talent to do it right and not look silly.

I will agree - avoid cliches. That would be what would kill what you're going for.

Thanks guys! I'll keep him as normal looking as possible and see if he can just "act" a little crazy.

The basement does look pretty creepy though...
Hopefully I can light it properly.

I'm looking forward to seeing this film. When i first saw this post i thought you were making a film adaption of a really popular video game...

Keep us updated!

LOL! :D

I've actually played that game.
FEAR doesn't stand for First Encounter Assault Recon in my movie though.

It just means FEAR.

Thanks for the interest.

Anyone have any comments on Colorista?

Mike

The teaser was okay. Need some better music. There wasn't any tension in the teaser, and didn't really get a sense of what it was about.

But I'm looking forward to the film!

These don't really get to "teaser" status, they're more animated stills - not enough to get any sense of what's happening. Don't misunderstand, they are good shots- and I do want to see more, but mainly because they are good shots - not from any understanding of what the story might involve.

When you live close to a script, you know where every sequence goes, and the mind fills in all the blanks. The audience doesn't have that luxury, you gotta lead em on.

Hmmm.... I thought as a teaser that it wasn't that bad.

I was thinking that a trailer more or less starts to spell things out for the viewers. I figured that with a 16 second teaser it would be alright to be vague.

Maybe I was wrong...

I'll try working on a better one.

Thanks for the opinions guys!

Cheers,

Mike

Well a teaser is meant to tease, to get people interested. For superman it's okay to be vague. Same for Spiderman, or for Pixar. But when no one knows what you come out with, or isn't already a fan of the subject matter, you have to show them, or rather tease them into wanting to see more. That's how I see a teaser. A full trailer helps people understand the storyline in more detail.
