Star Wars Holiday Special - All the horror, in only 5 minutes

Yeah, but even that. As cool as everyone says it was, I sat there thinking:

"Wait, who is this guy? Why are they fighting him? And who cares?"

It had none of the actual meaning of say the Luke/Vader battles. It was just some karate dude in funny make-up who had less character development than Greedo. I was bored by it. The hero is only as good as the villain he fights. And Darth Maul was LAME.

Personally I think what sank Episode 1 was the total lack of Jefferson Starship.

I'm watching the whole thing now, and after 20 minutes of Wookie dialogue, I don't know if I can take any more, but I'm going to keep on going.

I'm sorry Barry, but I've got to disagree with you there - nothing could save Episode 1. Not even that very cool lightsabre fight.

I'd heard of the Holiday Special before - but never before had I actually seen any of it. I had to turn it off, I don't want to tarnish the fond memories I have of the original movies (cause I sure as hell don't have any of the new ones!)

For those of you who haven't seen it....he's not kidding.
The first chunk of this thing was only wookies growling at eachother.

You know, just thinking about that makes me laugh....

Okay, but here's the real test -- if you were sentenced to hell, and the devil said you had to spend eternity strapped to a theater chair and watching just one film over and over forever, and in one room was a constantly-looping viewing of SWEP1:The Phantom Menace, and in the other room was a constantly-looping projection of The Star Wars Holiday Special...

... which would you choose?

You love it, you know you do. Someday I gotta see the whole thing...

See, in that torture chamber I'd have to take Episode 1. Because I'm going to grow to bitterly hate anything and everything about whatever it is I'm forced to watch (not that I don't already, of course) but at least with Episode 1,you're not further tarnishing good memories. Watching the SWHS would make you violently hate all the original characters... and who wants to ruin those memories?

Holiday Special. Any freakin' day. Of course, I'd probably strangle myself with the film about halfway through the second showing, but I might not make it to the end of Ep 1... :)

Its not the real thing till you watch it all.

Its something everyone should go through once.....a small piece of hell.

Bea Arthur singing in the cantina following grandfatherly wookie fantasys and jefferson starship using questionable microphones...its too much.

And without watching the real thing you dont quite get how boring it is to watch a family of wookies talk to each other for 20 minutes...with no subtitles.

The version I have still has most of the original commercials in it, too, which definitely adds to the ambience... and the pain...:Drogar-Evil(DBG):

Really?

My copy only has the commercials at the end, for the star wars toys.
I'd love to see who decided to advertise during this bizarre program.
"Star Wars Holiday Special? Of course we'd like to buy some advertising! How could we go wrong?"

Then again - they advertised on it 30 years ago and now I'm saying I'd like to see their commercials...so ...maybe they were on to something.

Companies that may have advertised:

-LeCar
-Reggie: The Candy Bar
-Billy Beer
-The Honda Kick & Go scooter

I'm sure many an account excutive lost thier job that following morning.

Boy Art Carney really needed a paycheck back then didn't he.

The famous roast joke about Bea Arthur definitely applies to Chewbacca's wife

GM
Kenner "Trail Tracker" (and BTW, I so would have wanted one of those had I seen this back then :)

60 Minutes/All in the Family/Alice/Lucy Comes to Nashville (?!?)/Dallas (CBS promos)
Comtrex
International Ladies Garment Workers Union ("Look fooooor...the union labeeeeeel...")

GM
Pillsbury Plus Yellow Cake (there's pudding in the mix, you know :) )
Hungry Jack Biscuits (with some cheezy "very tall guy" effects)
CBS Newsbreak (about Brezhnev and blizzards in the Midwest)
Contac
Bobby Vinton's Rock 'n' Rollers (CBS promo)
The Wild Geese (movie trailer, starring Richard Burton and Roger Moore)
Gladding Chevrolet (presumably local, selling '79 Chevette for $99 down and $99/month)
Consumer Catalog, Pueblo, Colorado (starring a guy who looks a lot like the "time to make the donuts" guy)

Tobor (the telesonic robot)
Revlon
Whirlpool (just a guy talking about how great American-made products are vs. anything else, over footage of a bald eagle, which is incredibly ironic considering how Whirlpool just bought out Maytag--which had had its headquarters here in Iowa--and shipped all those jobs to Mexico)

Twice as Fresh (air freshener)
Kenner Star Wars toys (with actual C3P0 narration :) ) (and I still have some of these toys, although I never got the radio-controlled R2D2)
Colony Wine (?!?)

That was a quick scan, so I probably missed some breaks, but that should give you an idea of what was going on...
