OH NO

A proposed NYC rule change will force many film-makers, still photographers and even tourists from being able to video/film on the streets of my fair city.

Here is a link with more info: [www.nyclu.org]

Here is a link to a petition decrying this very poorly thought out rule change: [www.pictureny.org]

Bottom line: No more access to the streets of NYC unless you have big corporate money behind your project.

OH NO

jeff-

thanks for putting up the previous link. i'm not sure where it was located but somehow i missed it.

the previous thread discussed the rule change as it would affect an indie shoot. but i believe the bigger issue is the ability to have unencumbered access to the images which make up the narrative of our lives.

i don't see this as an permit/liabilty issue, nor do i think it is about terror/security.

i do believe with the consolidation of corporate info-news-entertainment having a non-corporate view of the images within new york city is critically important.

Permits are free. If youre doing something just file for it. we do it allllll the time. Its not "opressing" art in any way. please be realistic.

If you would read the actual proposal this doesnt target tourists at all and there are many provisions written out for you to shoot without a permit. it effectively does a nice job (at least I think so) of making it so those that could get in the way and cause a problem will need a permit, and those that wont, wont. No system is going to cover 100% of the bases but this is a pretty good one to me. Needless to say the next time I'm in NYC i dont fear needing a permit to shoot some pictures.
