Most Film Like Image I Have Ever Gotten!

Now this is a great example of what a reel should be, short, sweet and visually appealing. Good work Mat. Only 15 eh! I hate young punks like you.

I'm also wondering about the grain lines (vertical or horizontal) -- how were these achieved?

Also, I notice a lot of people use film flares / glaring (not sure what they're called) which looks like the film is being burnt or is flaring as you're watching it -- nice effect (MacGregor did it in his 18 Seconds short film). Any idea how this can be achieved?

I noticed something in SIMILO (yet another by MacGregor) which has nice sun glares and there are weird bluish glares along certain parts of the image; like some kind of gradient filter except all blue, and only boxed off on certain parts of the image -- some artifact of shooting at the sun a certain way. How can these effects be achieved?

Another (very basic) effect I'd like to know more about is the sudden flashes of white (which go well with the music). Like the iris is all blown; but done in post as an effect. Just wondering how I can do this transition -- it works well with jump cuts.

After viewing the footage a second time, a lot of shots look way to shallow to me -- it MUST be using some type of adapter. I see some rack focusing with shallow DOF that seems to only be achievable by using a DOF adapter. Am I missing something here?

Hello Gordon. The film burning effects you are talking about can be achieved by using film clutters from: http://www.artbeats.com/prod/search.php?act=Search&kw=film+clutter&ct= they are single clips of film burnouts, glitches and so on, which you can apply to your timeline in your editing app. The transitions where it blows out to white can also be achieved by using a transition called "additive resolve"(what it's called in premiere). I'm pretty sure FCP have them as well.
I don't think he was shooting with an adapter. The way to achieve that shallow focus with a dvx, is to make use of your "macro" focus mode. Meaning that you go really close to an object and focusing on it, when the dvx focus number gets low(from 40 and down, i think) it goes into "macro mode", then everything in the background gets really blurry.

-cheers.

greenpiss lovers.... i think you should not be mistaken and believe that his achieved look depends entirely on this greenpiss cc preset. a great deal of this look, as it appears to me anyway, is also his exposure, almost as if he is exposing two stops under to retain the highlights...

yes/no?

I feel crappy That looks awsome. I've been shooting stuff like crazy I havent had a chance to edit or color grade. because I cant afford a computer; but everytime I look back at what i shoot on my tv it does not look that good, Am i doing something wrong or is it all in the editing, that was a DVX right?

anywhere i can get the film burns and clutters for free?, and also are dvx's still coming with MB when you order them, because orded mine a couple days ago and it said something about $250 mail in rebate but nothing about MB

if you dont mind me asking, how do you do your burns. I know about the art beats technique but i just cant get them to work good for me.

Edit: oh yeah and what are you shooting in?? squeeze mode? also the presets arent showing up for me (i assume you posted an image or something) is anyone else having this problem. Sorry but i really wanna steal this look from you. haha i mean "borrow"...

Ha I hope so. I am flat broke right now, spent my last two dollars Sunday buying a drink and then a dollar for the offering at church.

Wow!!! Where on earth can you get a drink for a dollar?!?! You must tell me where this magical land is!

haha Im only 15 give me a break...

Oh, never mind- must have been a Coke or something... :)

Anyhow, where was I? Oh yeah- props on your work. I think people get way too hyped up about presets for color grading, and forget that the image starts in the camera. You've got a great handle on the camera, and the magic piss formula is the icing on the cake (does this cake taste funny?)

Anybody else want to see some grabs of this footage before it was graded?

Thanks for the settings!
