Hyson's New HD Matte Box

Nic. Thanks a million for helping me out!!!!

Majormorgan: if I'm not mistaken, I believe you can add more stages with Hyson's new matte box!

I know all along that they've said that the proto boxes aren't in the final materials so I'm hoping the finals won't have holders that can break [especially with my precious Tiffen filters in] - so redrock guys, aluminium filter holders please...

If it was white it was the first proto, if it was black or dark grey then its the current proto.

I have been totally impressed by the pictures, price and feature list of the Redrock.

I shouldn't have said that the Hyson doesn't compare at that price because as a number of you have pointed out the Hyson is an excellent product and outperforms what we know of the current Redrock prototype - although that may change on release.

[Majormorgan]

the hyson outperforms the redrock microMatteBox? what did I miss here from what I have been tracking on rr:

a matte box that supports 35mm and cinema lenses (up to master or ultra primes)

works with red camera (not me, but i hear a lot over there about the rr)

stackable stage design that you can do yourself- you do not have to order additional stages upon ordering (i am not sure what that is about. can I add my own stages later or not?)

all stages are rotating - not just some or one

it has a sunshade - from what I can tell the hyson does not? how could that be?

the base configuration is $500 vs 650 or so for the hyson

someone please tell me how is that outperforming the redrock?

when I asked them about the prototype shown at cinegear it was printed from a 3d printer - i wouldn't expect it to show well for materials

what i do not understand about the hyson is where is the shade? it looks like filter stages with flags attached directly to them. let me put it another way: if i wanted just a shade a no flags, can I do it with the hyson?

my money is on the rr for now - hope they ship soon

Hi DJ and MajorMorgan. Where did you get the $500 figure (for the RedRock) from? I went to their website but there was no mention of that amount. Can you give me a link? Thanks.

The $500 quote from RedRock was broadcasted on a podcast from NAB...whether they stick to it or not...

Question about the Hyson's though...what if i wanted to attach a mattebox to a 102mm wide angle adapter? Would it work?

Hiya Josephfilms13,

Dude, I'm all for the Redrock, its the product for me ! I ordered one back when the NAB announcement was made.

I originally said "outperforms what we know of the current Redrock prototype".

It 'outperforms' currently as its out there and it has good reviews - an unfortunate state of the redrock being in development. Also as someone said, they played with the prototype and the filter holder broke. But that is the prototype and not the final. hence it outperforms what we know of the current prototype.

The main thrust of that is that currently we haven't got the final product to play with and test up against the Hyson.

So far with the people on the boards saying that the Hyson is rock solid, holds filters great and is sturdy, thats people's experiences.

I stick by that I believe the redrock will be rock solid and every bit as reliable when the final arrives.

And I ordered the Redrock back when they announced it at NAB 2007 [with the white prototype] as it looks to be a first rate product and even though there is the Hyson to compare with I still am going with the Redrock.

I am holding out for it being everything I want and if its possible outperforming the Hyson - remember that the hyson is also folding and so has a small footprint in terms of storage compared to the Redrock.

I think the redrock looks luke a serious piece of kit and can't wait for the redrock to be bolted onto my rails !

Mike is right, the $500 tag was in the podcast and also its been kicking around the redrock forums. Its also been in their latest comms to the list I think.

Redrock for me please !

Hi everyone

Yes, the target price for our base configuration is $500. the base configuration includes 3 rotating filter stages, sun shade, and french flag as josephfilms pointed out.

As for performing vs. outperforming, it is a bit of a moot point to compare a prototype product beyond just the specs. Great news is there are more solid options for indie filmmakers

If you want to be kept up to date on the microMatteBox, just add yourself to the reserve list at the top of the page here:

http://www.redrockmicro.com/microMattebox.html

it's free, no obligation, and we are giving away 5 free microMatteBoxes from the reserve list when it ships.

Cheers

Brian

Brian in the house !

It will be $500 well spent !

Thanks for stopping by. You said it much better than my long winded posting. I think once we start using the box we'll see how great it is.

How long now? Any ideas?

People will prefer different things, but for me its the performance plus damn does the redrock look good.

Thanks for all the info on the redrockmicro boards.

I can't wait,

Richard Morgan

Man, no reason to be upset, thanks for the info Brian as usual, just chatting about the Hyson X Mattebox in here is all, not looking to start a Mattebox War.

People are going to have different needs and what not. They will decide.

Your first post in here Morgan, seemed like you really didnt read much at all with what this topic is actually about, which is the Hyson Mattebox, kind of thread jacked, but its all good. :)

You say you dont know much about it, then list comparisons without reading about the Hyson. Not everyone will be able to compete with the great brand that RedRockMicro and Brian V proudly represent, and rightfully so, its amazing gear with a proven record, but lets show a little respect to someone whos devoted a lot of his time to creating even MORE GEAR for us to drool and dream over, Joel Arthurs @ HysonFilms.com.

Im sure brian would agree. Keep it tactful and more importantly, informed. Not simply, 'i dont know about that one, but ill tell ya bout this one'

Wow thanks. I should stop by more often :)

Still targeting late summer for the release. We will update our reserve list with details first, as they hit, so it's a good place to be.

As always if you have specific questions you can always drop me a pm or email brian@redrockmicro.com

Cheers

I should have the Hyson in hand next week. I have a buddy who already got one. The pre-order price was $575 shipped. It has a shade, flags, etc. etc. and you can customize whatever filter needs you have. He also includes 10 rubber rings of any size for adapting to different lenses.

Nic,

you're right as ever. I just jumped in with my excitement for the RR and then backtracked the rest of the thread.

Taken on board.

Thanks !

GreenFern, Joel Arthurs @ HysonFilms.com & the others in this thread.

I would formally like to apologise. My excitement for the RR got the better of me and I jumped in flippantly about the Hyson and with no real credibility. MY first post in this thread was out of character and also inappropriate.

Of course the Hyson compares, I shouldn't have said that. It looks to be a great product as you all are testimony to.

Please accept my apology for any offense caused.

I look forward to seeing the reviews of the Hyson and the RR.

Kindest regards,
Richard

I suspect in the end it will be like most things in the same class... both have positives and advantages and it will come down to what fits your personal needs.

Hehe, no need to apologize, atleast to me :P

I think i kinda jumped the gun a tad too. I think im overly cautious now? Idunno, but regards to you as well MajorMorgan. :)

Ya, ash G, basically the number 1 rule here on dvxuser, it all depends on what fits your needs, + and -'s for each.

Thats why I cant wait for reviews of both! As im very confident they will both be great! Now if only someone would release an arm under 100 bucks!

Thanks Nic,

I definately look back and see I waded in and wrongly discarded the Hyson. The Hyson is a great looking product and looks like it will perform really well.

They both look like fantastic products at unbelievable prices - great work from both of the companies. Its stuff like this that puts pro tools into my hands without having to remortgage my house.

Great work with the timelapse on your site btw. I'll pm you to ask about settings if you have them

Thanks !

Richard

Ya, ill try and remember them! hehe :)

if i had a house to remortgage , i would have probably done it by now , twice!
