NEW SURF FILM w/ HVX200

Aloha gang-

Just finished a new surf film shot entirely with the HVX200. I didn't have a water housing for the camera until late in the season so there are only a few water shots, but please check out the trailer... unfortunately it takes a minute to load up because I need to figure out the best way to get a hi-res clip compressed for internet without it looking too bad.

Nice-looking video, the in-surf footage was a real treat, that's always a great perspective.

You gotta work on the encoding a little. A bitrate of over 5Mbps is alot for 640x480. In fact, for 16:9 without letterboxing, you should output at 640x360. Also, you are using uncompressed audio, which is one of the reasons why the file is so large. For grins and giggles I recompressed the video using 96Kbps AAC audio and 640x360 H.264 at 800Kbps, and it still looks very nice while the overall size went from 90MB to 14MB.

those are some big waves! i liked this. some of the shots looked a little washed out to me though, of the surfers out in the water. they didn't look as good as your shots of the closeups of the people (surfers?) you did and of the people on the beach.

loved the dog strolling by at the end, lol. does he have speaking lines?

is this going to be a short film? i only ask because you're calling it a trailer. it's pretty long and reminds me more of a documentary type of vibe.

you got some good footage man.

its a 37 minute action sports video with a gospel message.

MICKEY- i think the washed out shots were probably underclouds, underexposed and then brightened in fcp.

HOFF- thanks for the copmpression advice... i'll check it out.

Great footage Craig, I enjoyed the trailer. It is hard to get a lot of good surfing shots. You got them!

Did you use a Century 2x tele, or other, for the surfing footage?

Wow, that looked really good, I really enjoyed that. Nice shots!
(I wish I had that girls lens...)

Very nice slow motion work. Music was a good match. I am really suprised you got such good closeups of surfers w/o a converter.

Hey Craig -- Great shots! My question is how do you paddle into the big waves? Obvious answer, VERY quickly. ;-)

Very fun to watch. Some day I'll make it out to HI and you can show me around.
Nice Job.
Lauren

For a tele-converter I use the Century 1.6x and sometimes the Century 2x. I like the 1.6x better because you can pull out a little (if necessary) and it doesn't vignette as quickly. Without the converter I have found the picture quality to be better, but we all know the zoom on these panasonic's lag. I always use a mattebox and nice polarizer when shooting surfing from the land. For water stuff I use a round pola and just screw it on. Thanks for the comments.

what part of hawaii are you from? i am vacationing in waikiki now. just got here today. was in maui for the last few days. beautiful here....

Craig,

Looks good bro glad that Thoff had that info regarding the size on your web site, looks much better. Looking forward to see how that HPX500 looks after shooting with it this upcoming winter season.

bruddah?? why come i no see da local surfa in dis here video brah?? no really great shots and use of your HVX... but i felt it was lacking the island spirit... i'm sorry if i'm too foward with my comments/opinions but when i think hawaiian surf movie... i automatically think of northshore the movie. Even though half their cast was not local they did a great job of capturing the true essence of island life with a pop culture twist. I know your project is more of a doc so there is no comparing apples and oranges. Anywhoo... awesome visuals... can't wait to see your project.

Great looking visuals and like the song and how it matches. I just picked up a waterhousing myself and loving the process. Hoping to get to HI next year but don't know if I'm brave enough to paddle out into that mess... well I'm almostly certainly not brave enough... but maybe I'll go to Diamondhead or somewhere more akin to a fat filmmaker/ sometimes surfer. Good to see a positive message attached to something so keep us up to date on what happens. I'll be posting some surf and wakeboard footie over the next few weeks. Cheers and good luck.

Craig very nice man!
I love all of the Walking on Water films and have always got copies of the films to give to the youth pastor at my church to use with the kids.
Can wait to get a copy of your film.
Keep up the great work.
