How should I capture A1-XH HD footage for FCP editing?

What's the best way to capture my footage onto a G5 for FCP editing? I shot the footage at 24f on Sony HDV tapes. I'll be editing transferring the footage to an external hard drive (if that makes a difference). Thanks.

There is a setting that is 1080p24 to use in the easy set up, use that for capturing 1080i 24 frame on the XH A1.

Mmm should I import the footage with my A1-XH? Do any cheap cameras import HD footage so I can lessen the wear on my heads?

No, just capture footage in large chunks so your not starting and stopping the camera a lot. This will put less wear on the heads.

Canon HV20 can and as it shoots in 24p can also be used as a crash cam / second cam.

Ok to clarify- I do use the A1-XH to import the footage but do so in large chunks?

What do you mean by that? Capture whole tapes at a time?

Thanks, sorry for all the dumb questions, just don't want to ruin my brand new A1!

I'm thinking to buy a Canon XH-A1 but now realize that no decks can play back the 24f footage. Either one must use the camera itself or another canon such as the HV20. I saw the advice about digitizing in big chunks, which is what I normally do. I'm just wondering how many hours of use - recording and playing back - we can expect from the camera, specifically the tape heads. I shoot docos that often use 50 hours of footage, times 2, ends up being 100 hours. Do the tape heads wear down, so that the quality of record and playback declines? or are they all of sudden unusable?

I break my footage up into about 4 mins chunks or properly called bins, it is easier to find particular footage this way. Don't do the whole tape or you won't be able to go to "car chase scene" instantly, or the "fall scene" just to throw a few examples out. Hope this helps.

You can always use markers or make sub-clips to achieve a similar result.
