Is Photography expertise an advantage?

Hello,

I am looking to take my videography to the next level, so I need some advice. Right now, I can do fairly basic videography with some motion graphics, but I'd like to equip myself with the skills of a DP before I attempt to do music videos or cinematography.
Would some knowledge of photography be an advantage? I know some of the skills are transferrable so I'm even considering getting a Nikon D200. From what I've read so far, already I can see that the emphasis in good lighting techniques can be valuable.
what do you guys think?

Photography skills are absolutely an advantage when working with video. There's so much that transfers over to video. Lighting, composition, the knowlege of aperature and shutter speeds... the list goes on.

Agree 100%. I'd say it's more of a "must" than an "advantage"...

i agree with you all! videography actually got me into still photog and not to mention its a lot of fun.

Do I even need to add another vote to this....?
Of course, I agree with everyone here.
You can learn alot from photography which will most defintely help you shoot better video, and have a much better understanding of how optics and light work.

It's funny... I have never even thought of these two separately before. Video IS photography. It is motion photography that shares at least the same optic principles. The only thing that differs is the format. I learned photography in high-school though before i got into video seriously so for me it always just seemed like the same thing.
