Oh man ... so wrong on so many levels .
But that's our ugufan :)

Haha, I'm glad we can keep our sense of humor in light of all this.

Good discussion guys. Got to love the Cafe.

did anyone else see vick's latest interview? in a freudian slip of epic proportions, vick proclaimed, "i am completely innocent of these charges; i intend to fight them to the death".

okay, okay i'll stop. i need counseling, can't you tell?

a couple of counterpoints to previous posts that I would like to address in a friendly spirit:

--topic #1: the discussion of making this too big a focus when people are suffering and that suffering does not often enough receive equal coverage.

I think of more extreme examples than Vick- rescue organizations spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to pull dogs out of Louisiana after Katrina and out of Lebanon during the recent conflict there. And while you have to think about allocation of resources, I just am thankful that someone is doing it. No one can reason or explain to these animals what is going on, they made no decision to participate and are completely innocent of events, and they stood the least chance of survival of all. I hope the plight of people effected by Katrina or War in Lebabon recieves greater and continued coverage. But it warms my heart that someone cares and is doing something about the dogs too.

When we rescued a Pit, one of the more amazing elements about the entire experience was the solid group of people willing to help in any way they could. Their examples really brought the better side of human nature into focus for me. A lot of selfless acts including offers to take the dog when we were away, to donate to her care, to spend a lot of time and effort helping us through a difficult process.

--topic #2: the issue of determining innocence or guilt before his trial

He is innocent until proven guilty under our system.

What I think is a separate issue (and creates the most controversy) --Does that mean he should be allowed to play football on National Television in the interim? In another profession, say law enforcement for example, a policeman who was involved in a public internal investigation is often suspended with pay pending the outcome of the investigation. I think the Falcons and the NFL should require he sort out the charges before returning to the playing field. I don't feel that you can withhold payment, but I do feel that now is not a time for football in Michael Vick's life. The Atlanta Falcons bear a great deal of responsibility in handling this situation and I think they should take proactive steps (unlike the Tenn Titans have shown with Pac Man) to provide a solution that takes him off the field for the time before the trial.

I understand your point. I work for a nationally televised true crime show, all I'm going to say.

If any of the shows you produce are aired on COURT TV, I love your work. That is my favorite channel.

As for Vick, these charges disgust me. I believe in 'innocent until proven guilty' so I wont stand in a line to have his head just yet but I will say that my gut tells me there is a 99.9% chance the scum is guilty. Yes, there is lots of human suffering in the world but dog is not called man's best friend for no reason. They are more than just animals. A dog is so often a huge part of the family. They do nothing but bring into a household pure love. And for scum to take the trust and love and loyalty they have for us and walk them into the valley of death should absolutely bring swift and severe charges.

Vick will continue to play until they know more I'm sure. But, if he is guilty, I hope some of the other defenders in the NFL knocks his block off.

The NFL pays Michael Vick his exorbitant salary.

Actually, it's the Atlanta Falcons that pay Vick's salary.

The NFL is free to suspend Vick at any point, without needing to wait for the legal system to find him guilty. Just ask "Pac-Man" Jones and half the Cincinatti Bengals. His endorsement deals and his contract with the Falcons probably have language in them that would allow them to be terminated at any time, as well. There are, as has been pointed out, certain facts not in dispute that could very well be enough for any of these organizations to take action. I would guess that there are a lot of lawyers at the NFL, Nike, and the Falcons poring over that language, and the indictment, and making damn sure that their cases are air-tight before anything is announced... :)

I think its great that we got some good discussion back and forth out of something so horrible.

You must have tons of fodder from local sports radio.

i haven't tuned in yet but being that this is georgia, i imagine there will be a worthwhile discussion concerning the metaphysical relationship between man and animals, followed by a dissertation on the cultural and socioeconomic factors which create environments more susceptible to violence of this nature.

sadly, i was wrong. i don't know if i caught it during a down moment, but some guy was arguing that in a cage match ric flair could beat two pitbulls.
