16Gig P2 cards - shipping date?

Does anyone know when the 16Gig P2 cards will start shipping? Also, how much might they cost?

Thanks,

The SD-card association just announced a new SD-card specification for bigger and faster SD-cards. SD-cards have been limited to 2 GB, hence the biggest P2 card is 8 GB (they consist of 4 SD cards).
If the newer SD-cards are faster and more reliable, more cards are suitable for P2, resulting in less expensive P2 cards. Theoretically.

16gb cards haven't even been announced as a product yet, but when this question has come up before, Jan has said something like "maybe announced at NAB".

The reason I ask is because I'm planning on shooting a documentary (possibly this summer) and I'll need some long running times. I think having two 16gig cards would be nice shooting either DVCPro50 or 720P.

Barry, I figured the 16Gig cards are a little ways off. Hopefully this summer they will be available. I could've sworn I saw Jan holding one at the past NAB. I think she even mentioned she put it through the wash by accidentally leaving it in her pocket - and it still worked!

Marcus, that's great news. And it is exactly as I have been predicting to the P2 naysayers - the storage capacities will go up as prices drop. Let the P2 revolution begin! :)

There's no word on the 16GB cards. So, I'll GUESS that puts them out at least 6 months to 12 months. Just remember, this is only a guess on my part. Maybe by NAB we'll get word on a ship date, but I'll bet they will NOT be shipping by NAB.

You're right. Those are some other great options. I don't really have a budget for 16Gig P2 cards except to maybe rent them for a few days to a week.

betting 2 16gig cards will cost as much as the hvx....

yes, but to reward those who bought the 8 gig P2's they will be doing a 2 for 1 trade up!

(file that in the "wishful thinking category).

how many hours of vid do each size card hold recording in 1080i hi def

2 gig cards

4 gig cards

and 8 gig cards?

lol, you mean minutes, right? I would love an hour on an 8 gig card but it ain't gonna happen...actually...What would the size of a P2 card have to be to get an hour 720P 24, theoreticlly of course?

In the user's manual for the hvx it says you can't actually use the 2gb card at all. In 1080i I think it's 1min/GB. I remember hearing it was the same as 720p 60fps... Might be wrong though.

For an hour of 720p 24... About 22-24gb. Depending on whether you can get 10 or 11 minutes out of 4gb. I've heard different things. So we're only a few P2 card generations away from getting sizes that tape only shooters won't complain about anymore.

the rate i'm going by the time i can actually afford one of these and get around to buying it i'll be able to get 2 100GB cards or something crazy like that

I seem to recall her saying Fall for availability...

I believe we'll hear some surprises at NAB concerning this. The 8gb card price drop didn't happen for no reason...

How about because if Panasonic doesn't do something to spur P2 usage, then Sony's XDCAM is going to win out? It has much greater market penetration than P2. Panasonic should get serious about P2 pricing. Sell it, the P2 store etc. all at cost if necessary to get P2 off the ground. Serious profit margins are less important right now than insuring P2's survival. Let's be honest, at $900 the P2 store will still be over-priced for the components involved...

Wasn't there someone talking about a hack for the P2 cards?
I seem to remember a mention of someone buying the cards at a fraction of the price, and hacking them to fit the HVX somehow.....off to search...

My guess is announced at NAB, shipping sometime between Summer and Fall. Remember, according to the P2 roadmap, 32 Gb will be out next year, and 64/128 just around the corner in 2008. With the price of memory dropping, I think each successive P2-card series will debut at the same price of its predecessor, despite having more storage capacity.
