HVX On-Camera Monitor

Hi Forum...

Been doing a lot of research lately and it seems like there's 4 options for an on-camera monitor for the HVX.....Marshall, Ikan, Varizoom SWIT, and Totevision.

Marshall with Nebtek alteration - $1600

Varizoom SWIT w/ Panny battery alteration - $1030

Ikan - $750

Totevision - $630

The cost of the Ikan and Totevision would go up with accessories, such as Sony batteries for the Ikan and the Hot Shoe mount for the Totevision.

The Marshall seems to have the best specs, but that price is quite a bit more than the others.

So with all that said, which one is the best for the money in everyone's opinion?

Marshall is what I have and its been great. It really boils down to just how picky you are in seeing your image. Generally... if you go higher priced than the Marshall you will get full 1080 resolution and maybe some scopes etc.

If your monitor is basically for framing then you don't need to throw allot of cash at one of these, nearly anything will do. If you are coming at things from the lower end, you should choose features that are most important to the way you work visually: overscan, focus, accurate color, blue gun, scopes, aspect protection etc.

If you can, see if you can compare some of the units side by side or at least try to demo some of them over a weekend, then you know what your getting before you layout the big dough.

If your willing to spend the money for the Marshall, then take a look at the new Panny monitor which for a little more is far superior.

Isn´t the new Panasonic 8" around 2800$...?
I really like my Totevision, though I pointed out some flaws in another thread...

That´s 700$ more than the Marshall and the price of a Totevision...
That being said with the Pana you probably just get the real deal, buy once and never look back...
Still, I would probably not get it for the HVX since now there are alternatives - and if money wouldn´t be a problem I still get a HPX first (but then the Pana 8")

yeah, but the panny is screen only, no batteries, or any accessories included.

for $2200 they could of given you a battery charges and carrybag don't you think?

Ofcourse it's the real deal, and it will be awesome, but the price if you add the accessories is a tad steep for me.

I dont think that Marshall includes any accessories either? You are right however, if Im shooting with the HVX ONLY Im probably not going to be requiring the Panasonic. The lower options like the ToteVision and Ikan are just fine for this cam. Of course if Ive got a budget Im shooting with the HPX-2000 and using the Panasonic monitor.

I'm working on a Semi-DIY solution RIGHT now and the only thing that I need to figure out is an ARM solution, for mounting the (edit) monitor securely to Rails or the HVX's handle.

I've worked it out to about 420.00 w/shipping (nice rechargable batteries included).

The only thing th really do is to test it out, then I'll report to everyone exactly how it went and all of my data; I'm recording as I go along.

I got some second thoughts about the Panasonic today and would be interested if anyone has different information.

The possible negatives:

1.They said they were not aware of it having a flip feature nor of a way to mount the monitor upside down. Very bad for on camera with a Redrock type adapter.

2. No way to fit it with a small onboared battery like the Nebtek panny battery retrofit. it uses too much juice so it must be run by bulky 12V batts. Again very bad for oncamera monitoring.

3. they were not all thrilled with the "red" focusing aid saying if the whole image was in focus it would go all red and that it could be disconcerting in practise.

Ouch. No way to turn it upside down at least? It'll have to be fabricated I'm sure. Can't be impossible.

the panny has mounting holes on top and bottom. so if you use something like a noga arm, you just mount it upside down. but no flip button.

as far as batteries, it has a anton bauer mount. a big brick would be problematic, but a smaller (thinner) a-b mount type should work. i plan to mount mine on my noga arm on the back of my zacuto rails (double mount) and use the smaller battery. it'll still be heavy, but i use a vinten vision 11 so it should be able to balance it all. as far as handheld, it'll be difficult with a monitor that size anyway. i'v seen pictues of the zacuto set up with the monitor up front, underneath the rails. we'll see how that works out.

I'm really curious to see how the whole "focus in red" thing shakes out. Will that work with the HVX or does it require the extra connection to a higher end camera?

I'm currently looking at the panasonic for my hvx200, and I've been told it won't display 720/25PN. Can this be for real?

Is 720/25PN a problem for all monitors?

And on the power issue, is there not a Panasonic battery mount solution available for the Panasonic monitor?

Looks like I'll be heading back down the Marshall road if I can't fix these fundamentals . . . . .

Nebtek should be about a month away from release of their new product. I am interested to hear any feedback from any users in this forum who may have test units?

If I had a nickel everytime I heard ..."about a month away"...
I'd have a boat load of nickels.

Panny announced it was being shipped a while back...still nothing.
The Marshall's version of 'focus in red' apparently uses white, which is said to work better.

There have been several threads about this that have me worried, but at this point, I'd be happy to have anything.

*sigh*

I had the Pana on a HDX900 shoot lately, but it was 24p, sorry...
Still I wanne add, that the pana with a Sony V-mount battery was too heavy for the noga arm and had to rest on the back of the cam, right after the handle, facing backwards - way too heavy for a HVX IMHO...
But the WFM and Focus in Red function really was a help...
