First off... a pinch of info:
I will be shooting a 30min short this winter. Below is my camera and monitor plan.
HVX + SG Pro Rev 3.
Marshall 7" lcd at the camera for focus and composition.
15" (+ or -) CRT as a director's monitor and for color correction/grading in post.
I am having a hard time figuring out my best option for the CRT. I would like to avoid using an LCD if possible, as I want the most accurate picture that I can get (color, exposure, etc... not focus)
The panny BT-LH1700W looks nice, but might be questionable for visually checking the color and exposure as notable by this thread.
The 7" Marshall that I have is great for checking focus, but no matter how many times I calibrate it, it is always a little orange.
My point is that it just doesn't seem like LCDs are trustworthy for an accurate representation of what the footage looks like (as far as color, exposure, etc). Since I will be using this monitor as a guide on scene and for color grading in post, it needs to be pretty accurate.
I was looking at the JVC TMH-150CGU, but it looks like I would need the IF-CO1COMG input card for component inputs. Since this monitor has 750 lines of vertical resolution... If I was shooting 720p and connect the HVX to the monitor via component (and the IF-CO1COMG input card), then I should be seeing the footage at full res correct? The only thing that I can think of that would make this incorrect is that fact that the monitor will have to be in 16 X 9 mode which will add black bars on top and bottom and thus use up some of the 750 lines. So granted, at 1080, I would not be getting a full res version of the image (only 750), but since I am not using the monitor to focus is there are problem with this?
If a monitor is rated at say 800 vertical lines of resolution and it has component inputs, then I should be able to get all 800 lines correct? Oh, minus the resolution taken up by the black bars for 16 X 9. I haven't decided if I will be shooting 720 or 1080 yet, but it sure seems that if I can find a monitor with 750 or 800 lines of resolution then I should be okay either way I go (since I won't be checking focus with it).
Ideally, a SMPTE-C CRT would be nice, but I'm guessing that the price (if I can find one) will be very high.
P-22 is not as accurate as an SMPTE-C CRT, but I think I would feel better with P-22 than an LCD.
I know that 15" (+ or -) would be a bit of a pain to lug around, but I'm willing to deal with it.
I'm pretty lost as far as what to do, and if I have my info right. I would love to hear any suggestions or comments so I can get over this hump, buy an damn monitor, and move on down the list!
Thanks
