24p advanced export problem!

Thanks in advance for any tips. Here's my workflow:

Shot footage on dvx-100a using scene file 6, 23.98 fps. Captured footage using FCP 4.5 HD at 23.98 fps and edited on a 23.98 sequence.

This seems to be a common problem, but I there is a noticeable strobe effect once I export the sequence. From what I've read, it is because the pulldown that was removed hasn't been added. I've tried:

1) Exporting to tape (using a computer fast enough to add the pulldown in realtime)
2) Exporting as a quicktime movie and using cinema tools
3) Recording off the sequence
4) Using Natress filters (g add pulldown and g advanced pulldown converter) This particular method actually slowed down and sped up my footage, respectively.

All of these have failed to add the pulldown and the resulting dvd's suffer from the same strobe effect.

I've searched this forum for similar threads, but none seem to resolve this problem. Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks!

If you're exporting to tape, you're adding pulldown. You can't export to tape without doing it, because NTSC DV is always 60i.

If you're attempting to add advanced (2:3:3:2) pulldown to the stream, that could be the source of your strobe. Advanced pulldown isn't meant for watching, and the way the fields are arranged in the 60i stream can exacerbate a strobe.

So, you want to export to tape as NTSC only. This will add a 2:3 pulldown (but no pulldown flags for removal later), and the motion should be smoother.

Also, the strobe may simply be in the footage. If you move the camera too quickly -- pans, tilts, zooms -- you will see a strobe owing to the temporal cadence of 24p.

So, is my only option to export to tape? And when I do so, do I need to adjust any settings before using the "print to tape" function?

Depends on what you want to do with the footage. You were talking about going to tape, so I thought that was what you wanted.

You can export however you need to (the FCP section would be a good place to post on exactly how). But you should be able to export a 24p Quicktime with no need for pulldown. It will simply play at that frame rate.

You probably also want guidance on how to create a 24p DVD.

If you still see a strobe, it's because the camera moves were too quick.

I've had some problems with exporting to tape, so I should have been more clear about what I intend to do with the footage.

I'd like to create DVDs to distribute among cast, crew and festivals. The 24p dvd option won't help because of the need for a 24p dvd player. Creating the dvd's will be easy once I can export to tape and re-capture the footage at NTSC 29.97.

There's no need for a 24p DVD player -- there's actually no such thing. Any DVD player ever made can play a 24p DVD.

Every Hollywood movie is put on disc as 24p. The DVD player does everything you need it to do in order to watch it on a TV, which includes inserting pulldown.

In any case, even if you weren't making a 24p DVD, and wanted to make a 29.97 DVD (though there's no reason to), you wouldn't need to print to tape and then recapture -- you can simply export a 29.97 MPEG file from your timeline and make the DVD out of that. Or, if you're more comfortable, you can export a 29.97 DV file.

I'm having a similar problem. I'm trying to export my 24p advanced footage from premiere to encore. I've edited in the 24p timeline preset. What's the best way to export this? Adobe Media Encoder confuses me somewhat. I've tried a few things, but I'm still getting a jerky picture.

Any help would be really appreciated.

Which versions do you have? Can't you do a dynamic bridge and just open the Premiere project file in Encore? If not, then you can just export back out to DV-AVI, 24p (Advanced), it's right there in the export settings.

I got 1.5 and i've been exporting dv-avi 24p (a). i'm doing a test right now to see how it looks. I did it the other day and it looked pretty jerky. I'll let you know how it goes in a bit.

In any event, thanks for responding.

yeah so i did the test, exported that to encore and burned a dvd and it looks choppy when i played it back on dvd. any thoughts?

Probably Encore wasn't removing the Advanced pulldown. Advanced pulldown will look very strange when played back directly. Are there any options when you import the clip into Encore. If you right-click on the clip, are there Interpret Footage or Clip Options that would allow you to remove the pulldown?
