My latest SFX test with DVX and AE.

Hi triplej96,

If this was a comical type shooting then it was funny.

The effects are really good and you obviously are learning how to use AE.
I am in no way an expert in SFX but I do build and use firearms alot and here is some of my opinions on this is..

the rifle shoots slowly and quietly, and then the bullet takes ages to hit the windscreen, This give me the idea that he is shooting a 'paintball gun ' if this is what you intended than that is fine.

blood doesnt normaly splurge out like a bucket of paint, unless its comical. You are shooting the subject from the front, most ofthe blood would be going onto the car seat, perhaps a little spray of blood on the inside of the windscreen would be ok on some of the shots?.

Car windscreen glass when shot blows holes and the surrounding glass shatters into small square shapes and stays together by the plastic protective film, it doesnt normaly leave nice shaped holes and crack or split slowly at the sides like you have it.
With the amount of holes in the small area they were in, the glass would of simply caved in after the first few shots.

Its still was nice to see, I know how much work goes into projects like this.

My advise is to visit a gun club and do some research into the real thing to see what really happens to stuff when, say its shot.. this will be one of the best things to learn from. only then you can put what you see for real into video AE graphics.

^^^ exactly what i thought. I'm no expert but nothing about that looks 'convincing' if thats what you were going for.

at the same time, however, if the style you were going for was comedy or a lighter tone you did VERY well. thats a very high-quality comedy effect, but it would be so out of place in an action movie.

To add to that: I think that the easiest/best/most effective way of doing low budget gunshots is to simply not show them. cut to somethign else right before or while the gun is being shot and you can cut back to the aftermath. then all you need is a good sound clip for the gunshot/shots.

just because we dont exactly see it doesnt mean it wont convince us that it happened.

I agree mainly it was for fun but it was also used to help me learn AE better which i am. I knew I couldnt make the windshield shatter in the amount of time I had and with not having the right bg plate. So I wanted to see what I could do trying to be realsitc but I knew some of the things would be off like riffle and blood but I had fun doing it. I used 50 layers in AE to achieve this and 11 layers of audio. The footage was shot months ago finally got around to messing with it on Saturday.

thanks
