In DFW for a PA (this ad was just placed, and he's looking for someone to leave town in two days):

Must be able to travel. Will leave on Thursday June 28th, return on the 1st of July. As PA you will be
responsible for assisting the DP, on a Tv Network shoot. Assist duties include but are NOT limited to: Carrying the pod and set up the pod, gear bag, labeling tapes, setting up lights, microphones, getting coffee, watching the gear and vehicle, etc.......Pay is $100 per day in CASH.
Shoot will be oiutside so you must be able to stand the Texas/Ok heat...Must be able to physically take care of yourself...You will babysit the DP,,,the DP will not babysit You.
More Bad news...Hotel room must be shared with DP, so NO Smokers or Snorers.
Must come prepped for at least 4 days...and must be prepped to work in the elements. AND you buy your own meals
Call me if You are SERIOUS ONLY:

The "buying your own meals" is what really got to me. I'm writing down this guys number, and everytime I get drunk and feel like messing with someone at 3-4am, guess who I'm calling:happy:

The short notice part of it is the most absurd. Craigslist is good for the "I'm postiing this at at 3pm...and I need a camera operator with own equipment for a 5pm shoot."

The pay is not too awful, but if you are forced to travel for the job I would think that they could comp your meals as well.

What makes it even more "interesting" is that in the actual craigslist ad, there is a smiley : ) at the end. As in.. AND you buy your own meals:)

(Of course on DVXuser it turns the symbol into an actual smiley)

Generally, my rule of thumb is that if the person knew what they were doing, they would know someone who could film for them as opposed to finding someone on craigslist. So generally the stock of people to take gigs from is pretty low. I've had way more stuff taken, paychecks stiffed and general buttheads from craigslist than anywhere else, so I try to avoid it if at all possible.

I will quite honestly call the guy if anyone wants me to.

Do it.
Tell him the ad sounds great - you don't have any problems with anything.
You don't mind travelling, sharing a hotel room, or paying for your own meals.
Find out where the shoot is.
Then ask him if they have a 'Sizzler' near the set.

If he doesn't know act a bit annoyed and tell him to look into it and get back to you.

I dont know why, but I find 'Sizzler' to be really funny.

Maybe at the beginning I'll say, "I'm pretty forgetful so I record all of my calls; I hope you don't mind. Is that OK?"

The "buy your own meals thing" just blows my mind.

Never underestimate the power of a good meal. I've lead many a PA to my lair in hell, with grilled Salmon. :)

I AM NOT A LAWYER -
But as far as I know it is legal to record a call in texas AS LONG AS ONE party in the conversation knows the call is being recorded.

It gets stickier depending on what you want to do with that recording - but as far as just recording a call, you're okay as long as 1 person on the line knows its being recorded (in Texas, as long as both parties are in Texas).

If the parties are in different states then the state with the more stringent law takes priority.

Awesome. Now, who has tips for recording the highest quality phone call? Can I tap directly into the line signal or will I have to jam a microphone by the ear?

this is the same buncha guys who will come on DVXuser or Dvinfo or something and scream "God why was my PA such and A$$hole!!!! i mean, im totoally brilliant director, and he just wasnt seeing my vision...... "

honestly, they deserve anyone they get......
