Letus35FE owners, Help me QC my Letus

I just bought a Letus35 FE and wanted to ask if mine was misaligned or something. I attached my Letus to my HVX without a 35mm lens and noticed that when I zoom all the way out, the hole on the other end is not 16x9, but rather 9x16. Anyone else get this? Does something in my Letus need to be rotated 90 degrees? TIA

You obviously have either the end containing the ground glass, or the entire Letus mounted at a 90 degree angle.

What do you mean I have the end containing the GG? and as for the entire thing mounted 90 degrees, I screwed it on so it's snug, I can loosen it to make it appear 16x9, but then the entire thing is loose. Is anyone else's Letus like this?

Oh, I just reread your post about the GG, I cant rotate the GG 90 degrees because there's a screw that holds the GG in place and that screw screws into a hole on the Letus, so there's only one position to put it in.

Do they offer support? I am looking into adaptors and would be sacred to put that kind of money down and not have a support available.

WAIT! Don't screw it on all the way; If Quyen sent you a Letus that you are getting the 9x16 on it is because of the way he attached the interior threads; you are going to need to most likely back it off a slight bit and use your rods to support it's placement.

I had to build a foam core support the first time I bought a Letus; mine had slightly the same thing going on. My foam core support was built to basically cradle the Letus in the correct position by building up foam stacks underneath it's angles. We gaffed it on to the foam core support and attached the main support boards in between the HVX and the Tripod Plate tightly; the foam acted as a cheap rod support system.

If you keep the HVX zoomed to it's max, you shouldn't have any issues with tightening the Letus100%; that is, as long as you don't overcrank it and get it stuck. Then, you shouldn't technically need rod support, at least according to Quyen.

By the by; do NOT put a clear UV or other screw on filter in between your Letus and your HVX without rod support; it will cause the Letus to pull itself apart because the Stepup ring is not offering it's full support.

And no, Quyen does not currently have serious tech support. He does offer support by email, typically very well and 95% of the time he will respond within 20 minutes, usually 3 or 4.

That being said, he still doesn't have a tech line. My company has recently began distributing his products; we have taken it upon ourselves to try and help him out, we've got a goal to get a tech team up and running for Letus full time within the next few months. I can't garuntee it, but I can do whatever is possible to see it through; and, in the meantime - if you need help with a Letus and he isn't available, give me a call or PM me!!!!

Oh, that sucks. Now I have to use a rail system for my Letus? One of the main reasons I got it was that i didn't have to use a rail system. What a bummer.

It shouldn't be advertised as a adapter that doesn't need a rail system if the QC isnt put into manufacturing to hold that claim. Some of us use it to help make our decision when choosing between the lower priced adapters.

I agree with you. You don't HAVE to use a rail system; just zoom past the 9x16 and you'll be shooting in 16x9; garunteed.

The Letus offers the Flip; until Redrock incorporates their PL mounts onto their M2 adapter there will be no other adapters who offer the same mini35 with as many options as Letus. M2 says they are working on it though!

BlackDog, I was shooting with my Letus FE and HVX the other day with a 200mm Canon lens (it's a fairly heavy beast!). The weight of the lens seemed to loosen the GG housing, causing the entire adapter to rotate. Before rotating, the image looked great....after rotating, image looked great with the exception of the black at the top right and bottom left of the frame (obviously the inside of the unit). Any suggestions when using a heavy lens like that? http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/images/smilies/violin.gif

Hmm... Are you sure that the lens/ground glass itself doesn't need to be cleaned? Try using an easy can of dust-off, spray your unit down well. This is why the Handy Man special is so attractive, it's very easy to take apart, clean and put back together.

Now, when you say it caused the entire unit to vibrate, do you mean you could feel a slight shaking when you touch it? As in, something similar to one of those "squiggle pens" from when you were a child? If so, that is the ground glass itself spinning, the unit should have a very SLIGHT vibration, this is normal.

As for the 200 - Yowza. That is a beast. If the Lens you have on is so heavy that you have to worry about it ripping the Letus off the front or causing some serious wear and tear on your Letus, I would always make sure to have it supported, very well. Regardless of what Quyen says, remember that he is not in the field using it with you, he's at his house. So, even if the 35 FE for the HVX doesn't REQUIRE rod support - I would be extra cautious and give it the support anyways when using heavier Lens'.

Besides; get some rods and then you can slap on a sweet focus pull as well : )

p.s. - Or, were you saying that the Silver colored ring which is threaded into the Letus' body is physically loosening and beginning to rotate?

Morisato, this is an easy fix (if I understand correctly). I just bought mine and wanted a snug fit with the step down ring and the adapter. I've heard of people complaining about having a loose fit but it's easy to fix.

The threaded part of the Letus that screws onto the step down ring is not permanantly mounted (which suprised me) so you can rotate it. I got everything screwed onto my camera snugly and then rotated the the threaded part of the Letus (I think it's called the "thing-a-majig") to where it would stop snugly the way I wanted it. You see some people with it mounted up or down, it doesn't matter but it sounds like yours stopped at sideways. Mine fits snugly and I don't need rails except for the longer and heavier telephoto lenses.

I hope this is helpful.

I think that's what he means. The same thing happened to me, that's how I discovered that it could be rotated for a snug perfect fit. That's not the GG, it's the silver "thing-a-majig" that I was talking about in the previous post.
