48 Hour Film: Brevis Adapter!

Hey everyone! We entered the Baltimore 48 Hour Film Project this past weekend and had a great/crazy/stressful time. Our genre was "film de femme" which means we needed a strong female lead. Our prop was a flag, our character was Glen Travers, painter, and our line of dialog was "I can't remember everything."

We wrote until 7 am on saturday, then began shooting at 11am. We shot for about 10 hours and then spent the rest of the 48 hours editing. Unfortunately we had issues burning a DVD and were an hour late to the drop off.

We shot in HD on the fx1 in the fake 24p cine mode, and then converted to real 24p in post. We used the brevis 35mm adapter and edited in premiere. I hope you all enjoy it.

Overall, I really liked it...some very clever pieces of dialogue, especially for the female lead, who (imho) did an absolutely fabulous job.

I thought the production was a bit on the dark side overall. I can see that a low-light setting might have been intended and certainly fit the tone of the scene, but it was a bit too dark for my personal taste...but hey, this is 10 hours of production, so what the hell?

My only other comment would be regarding Glenn's monologue...perhaps a bit longish, which I thought detracted from the pacing of the dialogue that had otherwise kept the piece moving. Again, perhaps a purely personal thing.

Overall, though, I thought it was very funny...definitely caused some laugh out loud moments for me (the play on words with "tips" / the failed "upgrade"). And again, I thought the dialogue for the female lead was really very good and that her performance matched the script.

For a 48 hour submission, I think it was a score. Made me laugh at least... :D

Very well done for 48 hours. Snappy dialog. I will say I go along with everything the Soldier said.

The actors didn't have the most flattering or interesting lighting on them but hey, 10 hours? Not bad.

Thanks for all the kind words. I've never had a piece take so many different changes in tone in such a short time. It started out dramatic, then turned into a slapstick comedy, then turned into a little mix of both.

Thanks for the thoughts on the lighting. Lighting for 48 hours gets a little hectic, and hindsight is always 20/20. We were just happy that you can make out the faces. Our actors we're great throughout the whole production and really stepped it up when we needed them to.

Thanks for all the comments, we love knowing what we can improve on for next time.

I think that this statement triggered something in brain and reminded me as to why I made the lighting comment... :D

I think you did have some really good actors, and as I said before, the female lead was clearly the strongest. At first, I thought her delivery tended to be a little flat, but as I continued to watch the film, I really did a 180...I think she just has a very non-chalant, almost sardonic way to the way she delivers her lines, which really fits the character.

I think that kind of delivery only works because of her facial expressions...you see her facial expressions and you realize that there is a lot of emotion in her face that you don't necessarily hear in her voice. With better lighting and perhaps some close-up work, that would have come through a bit more and strengthened the presentation of her character.

Example - I love the look she gives when she talks about the ease of getting homosexuals together. Its snide without being rude and just downright funny...I felt that was a moment when I want to see exactly what her face is saying that her words and voice aren't.

Another example - The look she gives after the cut scene to the "failed upgrade" is another great look that could have been better presented with better lighting.

But seriously, take this criticism with a serious grain of salt...these are just nits. Overall, I thought it was great, and for 10 hours of filming, I thought it was really great.

Again, congrats... :D

Soldier, thanks for your comments. I can't wait to tell our actress how much people love her performance.

I do wish we were able to get more close ups as well and we will definitely spend more time on lighting for our next project. I wish this had been like a 55 hour film competition so that we would have been able to go and get some of those close ups you were talking about. I think they would have been awesome.

Thanks for all of the comments. I love hearing about how we can improve. If you have time, check out the lifeguard link. That was another project we worked on, although we had much more then 48 hours for it.

Yeah! That was a really nice piece, it's refreshing to watch a short with good actors. Your female came across really well. One thing I don't think anyone has mentioned was the audio. I think it was really well done, simple and clean. Good work.

PS. taser = really funny.
