BluLine fresnels???

We used a pliers to try to get it off and it broke. I don't think it had to do with build quality.

So it was possibly a user mistake then... that's good news!
So it seems we are back to the flicker on the 650's being the only problem sort of confirmed... sort of cause there is no other experience recorded with these lights.

You might have gotten two bad ones... let's hope for that... (and that you get it fixed easily and at no expense).

The guy that owns them said he could send them back but he rather fix them himself. I think he said there was a known problem with the 650s and he believes they fixed the problem.

Did you guys get around to replacing the 650 globes with Arri globes to try and do away with the flicker?

Richard mentioned on the other thread (HMI guts on Blue Lines) that he thinks it might be the bulb if it were the case that those happed to be lesser quality than the ones in the other lights... have you taken a look at them? any markings that look familiar? I am curious to find out and I am sure you could use an extra pair of lights :)

I will know tomorrow. They went to Cali for a few days to shoot something and go to a film fest that the short was in so I have been off for a few days. I will look at the bulbs before we strike up and try to get a picture of them.

Dont forget that Arri lights (which bluline bodies seem to be based off of) vent from the top. If you mount them from a ceiling, make sure the head isnt upside-down. If it is, then the heat can not vent thus overheating the wiring. The yoke is designed to fully rotate to fix this issue when hung from a fixture. Just mentioning in case you weren't familiar with them.

Thanks for all the updates. Looking forward to getting some for myself.

oh... take a look at your 650 globes cause if they look different that might be an indication of them being the problem

I was getting really excited about ordering some of those blueline lights. I emailed them 3 days ago and still no answer. I guess they dont ship to canada!....bummer. Now if Richard had all those lights already for sale...i would be a happy men.

BTW Richard, when i was in indonesia they were selling redhead clones made in china for like a 80$ a pop.(they sell for about 300$ here in canada)Unfortunatly when i was there jakarta was flooded and the stock could not get out of the warehouses so i never got to buy any. If you could find the original factory theyre might be a market for it.

While im at it....i never used any of those light banks like the cl455. What are they used for on a set. You use them as a fill? can it be used as a keylight?Sorry if its a dumb question.....

It's been over a week since I tried contacting ImageWest last, I've given up trying to get the blulines through them. But I ordered one of their fluorescents on eBay, and it shipped the next day, so you can probably order one of their 650s off there (they only sell the 1ks on their website).

You can pick up those cheap redhead clones on eBay for about that price. I just ordered one the other day, still waiting for it to get here. I don't have high hopes for the quality, but the price was worth a try.

I'm working on it. It's not an easy job coordinating all this stuff I'm trying to get done for our next batch of products.

Yes, I see these redheads all over the place and could be sold quite reasonably to my customers if there was really that much demand for me to buy in quantity. The main reason I considered selling any tungsten units (fresnels) at all was it can get me the quantities I need for the fixture bodies I want to buy for the new products I'm working on. If I carried the redheads, it would mostly be as a reward for loyal customers buying other of my products.

Can be used for anything you would use any softlight for. Key or fill depending on the effects you want. Just think of it as a soft light that doesn't project so much heat around it like a tungsten solution. You can get it in "tungsten" (3200K) color or daylight (5600K) color temps too. The normal tungsten softbox has to be gelled to go to daylight and loses a lot of light in the process.

Yes! This is the number one suspect. I rate it as 98.7% probability ;-) it's the bulb. And about nil that it's the wiring.

Anything is possible but usually when debugging problems like this, you usually start with the simplest choices first. The most likely would be bulb in my opinion as some of these chinese tungsten bulbs may be lower quality. By the way, does it actually say "120v" on it somewhere? If it's a 220v bulb, it might work but would definitely have a shorter life and might act somewhat flaky at some point for sure.

Ok so the 650s problem was the wiring wasn't up to par for the load and turned into dust. Changing the wires out has fixed the problem and I believe that they fixed this problem over at Bluline. My friend said that the guy was nice about it and said to send him the bill for fixing the lights also. I did notice that none of the lights have a UL stamp on them.

Wow, 650w at 110v is only about 5.9amps. That's not so much. That wiring must have really been the worst I've ever heard about.

That's not good. Hopefully someone crack one of these puppies open and make sure they're kosher. Aram, I nominate you.

wow, but I guess that makes sense... they are trying to find the cheapest possible way to manufacture these... however if the casing is well built by that company then there is nothing to worry about if we are considering Richard's HMI version... or is the wiring also included in the body as purchased from the Blue Line factory in China?

if so then Richard might have to gut em' out and re-wire them...

what does the UL mean? isn't that a pretty standard certification for electronics?

UL is mostly a marketing thing that you have to have for selling to some institutions. There's no law that says devices have to be UL approved. As for the wiring in my units when I'm selling them, I'll have specified a certain type of heat resistant teflon of the proper gauge.

So Aram how's the project coming along? Are you shooting any more soon? You know we are waiting on those grabs right? :)
hehehe... I know you are waiting on the guys to come back and get their act together, just a reminder. Can't wait to see it
