Zacuto released a brand new line of 20mm,35mm, 50mm & 85mm adaptive lenses which they are referring to as their DOF series. If the image quality stays sharp, this could be the best/simplest way to change your depth of field.

Unline the bulky M2 and other large sized adapters that add too much weight, the Zacuto is using patented technology which allows one to simply screw on three simple pieces of equipment . FIrst you pick out which adapter is needed for the camera (The HVX200, Varicam& HD900 all work with it).....screw the adapter on to the front of the camera...then simply pick out which lens you like and screw that on top of the adapter. Minimal extra weight without the hassle of mounting the M2.

I was hoping some of you out there could give me some of your insight on this....im very skeptical since it all seems all to simple to adapt your camera to other lenses. The fact that they dont really have any test images or footage of it make the matter a bit worse.

They announced that more lenses will be available summer 2007.

the link is on the top of my post.

If this product holds up to his end of the bargain...cinematic filmmaking on the hvx just got a bit easier. :)

This info is out for a long time now. The estimated delivery of it is Q3 2007 which means end of september (at best). Maybe they will show it at IBC. Who knows. But until then it's all science fiction, like the RED cam.

It aslo seems like you need a seperate lens adapter for each different lens. If I'm reading it correctly say you have 3 lenses means three different lens adapters. The camera adapter stays the same but different focal length changes means different/seperate lens adapter. This could get costly. 12-15k for 4 lens complete system. Now we're in RED or HPX500 territory.

yeah, i think their stuff is zeiss only. and at the prices were talking there, for my uses thats like putting an elevator in an outhouse. if im dropping that level of scratch i'll just drop a few grand more on a red with a couple of lenses.

zacuto really needs to re-investigate their pricing strategy. if their stuff was more competitive - they could OWN the market...

lol
Yeah, with Zacuto's system costing $12K-15K,
that's TEN TIMES the cost of an M2 or Brevis.
You could buy two additional HVX's, or as Mico said, get an HPX500 or save a bit more and get a RED.

It's not cheap, but that includes four Zeiss primes, adapters, gears, rods, lens supports, and a case. You have to compare apples and oranges.

They are expensive oranges, but undoubtedly hand-picked.

Limited number of users gonna be abl to come up with those oranges too. Man, when adapters are getting cheaper and cheaper.. this kind of goes against that whole thing..

Love the only 12-15k... for that much cake, I'd be in a 2/3 cam with a real piece of glass... I'd like to have some of what the Zacuto people are smoking... hehehe

I think the key to Zacuto's pricing strategy is: Zacuto sales and rental "boutique"... No kidding.

Interesting stuff. Too bad they don't make it for a more affordable line of primes- a kit for Nikkors would be nice. Yeah, for that money I'd be stepping into a 2/3 inch camera as well. Bummer.

The Zeiss-Zacuto DOF Series may go the same way as the Cinaporter...it becomes a concept that is so ahead of the market that it loses its ability to be cost effective. Is the technology so percise and cutting edge that it costs them that much money to make the product....or is itm 12-15k because they think we will pay it?

The Price of an HVX /w the DOF series

almost equals the price of ....

two HVX cameras, a full set of lights, tripod, HD field monitor, two 8 GB cards, laptop and a nifty luggage to hall your crap in.
