1080i/24Pa on P2: Remove 2:3:3:2 how?

On my Avid Xpress Pro HD (v.5.6) system. what must I do to remove 2:3:3:2 advanced pulldown from my P2 card files? My HVX200 shot 1080i / 24Pa pulldown to an 8GB card.

The goal is to get the 1080i /24pA files from the card into Avid.

Then remove pulldown.

And finally transfer the Avid sequence to a Data DVD for eventual playback on a 13' x 24' theatre big screen. The HD data DVD will playback at 24p thru a computer system tied to the projector.

So far in my limited checking into this, I don't think Avid has a solution for it. It will only see P2 MXF 1080 as 59.94i, which will leave the pulldown in place, which would be okay if it were normal pulldown, but since advanced pulldown was never meant to be seen, it may look odd.

When capturing from tape, Avid can remove the pulldown. So the question again: how --or can-- Avid remove advanced pulldown from P2 card files.

Maybe there are some third-party utilities that convert the MXF file to a Quicktime file that has no pulldown?

Is there any good software-only solution out there?

I easily might be missing something obvious, but if not, then I am amazed that, at this point in time, neither Avid OR Final Cut OR Panasonic has a solution for this. Perhaps one of the other editing products handles it correctly - like Sony Vegas or Canopus Edius.

For awhile at least, it looks like I might need to just shoot at 24p normal pulldown, so it can just be edited on 1080 / 59.94i, timeline, leaving the pulldown in. That's how anyone will eventually see a broadcast program anyway.

I will look at how the 24Pa plays on 59.94 timeline--if worst case, it just had to remain at 59.94.

The only other time I saw that playing from a DVCPro-HD tape, it didn't look "right" because the pulldown is not what your eye expects.

Thanks in advance for any help on this confusing(at least to me) and frustrating topic.

Make a quicktime reference file of the footage in avid and then open that file in After Effects. right click on the file and select "interpret footage" then "main" then "guess 24pa pulldown". Now export the footage back out of AF and into Avid using a quicktime with animation codec.

Yeah, this is one of the shortcomings of Avid's HVX implementation: they don't allow 24pA pulldown removal. Or, for that matter, 24P pulldown removal. They expect you to cut all your 1080 footage on a 60i timeline, regardless of what frame rate you shot at.

Sure would be nice if they'd address that in a future update!
