Delivering on HD: HD-DVD or Blue Ray?

That is incorrect.

How is that incorrect? Are there Conventional DVD players that can play Hybrid discs?
It could play back on an HD DVD player. But not in a standard player.

The ability to play back a high-def DVD is, of course, not included in the specs for a regular DVD player. There are a very few DVD players out there that have extended their specs to include the ability to play back HD content; the Avel LinkPlayer is such a device. But you cannot author a DVD in HD and expect it to play on everyone's DVD players, that's not gonna work.

yup - all conventional, we'll call them SD DVD Players, won't support the bit rate that is required for HD playpack, in fact some older ones struggle with maintining the bit rates of SD DVD with higher average bit rates.
There's also the x factor of having a player that supports playback of burned discs, especially when the stardards emerge after the players. Basically I think we can expect to see alot of the same issues that arose when the abilty to burn dvds came to the market after dvds several years ago. Some players will play some discs, some players wont, some players will play burned discs, some players will play only replicated material. Hopefully compatibilty conflicts will be kept to a minimum this time around!

If anyone is interested I fit 50 mins of footage from my HVX onto a 4.7 gigabyte DVD-R, I used Compressor and used settings H264 for DVD STUDIO PRO. Gotta say it looks just as good as when I recorded it in HD.

That's what I thought.

Just burned a short HD Clip to a DVD-5 at the highest bitrate that DVDSP supports (29Mbps) and ran to Best Buy to test it on the Toshiba player, It played back perfectly and looked great. The guys at Best Buy said that the compression even looked better than their hd dvd demo disc!
