Spies Girls

Funny.

I'm used to that reaction from the audience that watches my stuff.

you know, comedic actors and actresses are always the best dramatic actors and actresses. take dane cook for example ;)

Very thought provoking post Kyle. Interesting.

I'm not sure I agree with you - but probably do.

I personally think that doing comedy well is very, very difficult - more so than drama. Comedic actors who have done drama can really knock it out of the park (Robin Wiliams and Jim Carey come to mind). I also think Rowan Atkinson is amazingly talented and could really kill a dramatic role (did you see him in Keeping Mum?). (I just checked IMDB and Atkinson is Oxford educated and holds a degree - in electrical engineering. Maybe we theorize that if you can do electrical engineering you can do comedy or drama!) Take a look as well at a guy like Hugh Laurie. One of the most talented, naturally funny actors around but absolutely kills his dramatic role in House MD (and to an extent his smaller role in Spooks/MI5).

On the other hand, as you point out classically-trained dramatic actors can clearly do comedy incredibly well. A recent thread here highlighted Patrick Stewart doing comedy on Extras (see: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showpost.php?p=952764&postcount=2). I wonder who the "most talented" dramatic actor would be today? Anthony Hopkins? Judi Dench? I think they could truly pull off comedy (OK, maybe dry comedy) and it would be great if they would try that (maybe they have, but I can't recall any examples).

So back to your point - maybe talent is just talent - and if you can do the more difficult task well (comedy), then you can do drama. So I guess I'm agreeing with you. Really interesting thought Kyle.

Anyway, now I'm back to my own personal drama - the quest for the elusive six minutes. Cut cut cut.

I don't know about Hopkins... but Judi Dench did a sitcom called AS TIME GOES BY... it plays on some PBS stations on Friday or Saturday night...

Love that Sitcom...

Update for 25 May.

Yeah. Editing. Kinda love it. But really (actually) hate it.

I have some huge time issues here (as you may have gathered from earlier posts). Cutting like crazy. I hate idiot writers that write 11 pages for a 5 or 6 minute short. And the damn thing is written so it interweaves and leaves little room for significant cuts without creating continuity ripples. I also hate directors who direct for the script and don't provide for coverage in the event about 1/2 of the script has to be cut. I should fire those jerks.

Yeah - blown away that for a guy that started early, the deadline for entry is this-coming Thursday. There must be a severe flaw in my workflow because I should have been able to finish this with two weeks to spare. Idiot editor. I think I'll fire him, too.

On a more positive note, I so love HD, however, because when rendering to DV (or lower) quality it enables me to jump in and re-frame without loss of quality (to crop and cut out props and other BG paraphenalia that would not otherwise match because of the cuts I'm making).

And the music's great. Thanks for that, Erik.

Anyway, that's it for now. No more posting until I cut another minute from the rough ...

I do! I do!! It's the instrument I played most all the way through HS ... got pretty dang good at that thing, too. Oh, and let me tell you, NOTHING short of drums drives women more crazy than a good tuba player, lol.

Yes.

It's all becoming so much clearer now ...

Hey Dahopa. I discovered Texture trying to sneak in the theme song for Regis and Kelly backwards at a near subliminal level into the audio for S C H I T T E K A T T E R .

Watch out for that.

When I confronted him, he said something about regretting drinking the whole bottle of cough syrup or something.

It does really put things into perspective, huh?

Brian, good luck with all the editing! I really cannot wait to see this film. :)

Ha! Funny you should mention Regis & Kelly, yea, went to work today and discovered our WABC studio had a fire Sunday (NYC local WABCnews & R&K both come from here). Our engineer's (my bosses) are still assesing the damage. A huge cleanup crew is on site as, among other problems, our basement offices flooded. I'm wondering how this will affect my ability to work the bugs out of my last couple of music cues. Its gonna be interesting. I picked a bad week to quit drinking cough syrup!

Hey - thanks Miss D. Yeah - up to my eyebrows in renders. I think I can get it down to 2 MB ... just need to make it 64 x 38 pixels. Doesn't look too bad though if you sit across the room and squint ...

Oh yeah. And my dog ate my homework ...

You aren't one of these guys that phones in a bomb threat to LAX because he doesn't want to go back to the humdrum life in New Joisy are you?

Seriosuly - you are a God Erik. Great music, my friend. Of course, I also like the Beach Boys and Bobby Sherman, so that may not be saying much.

Cheers. Now back to rendering. See "abattoir" ...

In passing, I also note that I have NOT included credits in my uploaded entry.

I want to make it very clear that this project would not have been completed without the people involved. As such, I will be posting credits on this thread about three days after the films are online.

The reasons for the slight delay will become apparent in time ...

Ahhh, nothing a little sleep deprivation couldn't take care of. :D

Texture. The Phil Spector of the Spies Girls production team ...

Funny thing is, I really wasn't hired to do the music, I was really hired to keep bumping our thread up to the first page, hehe. :)

Actually, Dahopa's enthusiasm is so damn infectious that I was filled with inspiration and hopefully made something that folks will find entertaining.

Er ... you were HIRED? By whom and for how much?

We may have to talk.

But to use that great line from "Layer Cake":

"Do you know where I live?"

Hey, Ian.

Thanks, but if you like the poster you'll probably be disappointed by the short.

Unlike the poster, our short has no beaches, no palm trees, no crystal clear blue seas, no camouflage and no girls.

Actually, all those components were filmed, but Jarred refused to let me enter the film at 9 minutes in length (actually he didn't even return my call - seriously!), so those (along with continuity and a half-recognizable story line) were the first elements that had to go.

Bummer, but don't blame me.
