Festival Compression - Questions / Strategies

glad it's working for you now Kyser, thanks to msconce. back in horrorfest I had major issues with DV AVI, along with several other codecs I tried, which is why I just stick with uncompressed now from PPRO and let QT do the compressing. But I'm glad it works for you.

I'm trying QT uncompressed from PPro now. Early testing looks great and QTPro seems to prefer it over DV AVI.

Should I set the pixels to 1.0 square? (1440 x 1080)

Thanks again!

Maybe I'm missing something, but that's a 4:3 aspect ratio...don't the contest rules require a widescreen aspect ratio like 16:9? My workflow was strictly for stuff shot in squeeze mode.

But maybe you're shooting 4:3 and adding black bars to get the 'widescreen' look? I don't know the rules around that since I don't do it.

But, assuming you shot in 4:3 then yeah, keeping the pixels square will maintain that.

aopollyon:

It won't let me work with the audio for ANY file i open.

I even loaded QT pro 7 onto my other computer and it does the exact same thing.

Is this a problem with vers. 7 only? There's got to be some kind of preference or something disabled. This sucks and I think im not gonna make the deadline.

ripupthehwy, In the quicktime pro settings, you have to tell it to have audio. This menu is below the video settings. Choose apple lossless 32khz. That should work. Also from your editor, try to export uncompressed quicktime and then use Quicktime pro with my previously mentioned setup. Also, if you want to, render out a 200-300mb sorenson file and I will try to compress it for you. If we go this route, just make sure you host the poster and such and I will upload them as well. Use Xdrive or something like that to hold the big quicktime file online. Let me know! I will help if you need it!

So in your QuickTime Pro, the checkbox for sound is grayed out/you can't select it? As I said, I'm at work not at home where I have QT Pro installed so I can't check til I get home. Maybe if you post a screenie of what it looks like? Or go with msconce's generous offer of assistance.

I shot it with the Canon HV20 in widescreen.

When I export with Cineform it is widescreen.(Can't remember the pixel AR, definitely widescreen though.) When I export with QT it comes out squished in 4x3, unless I switch the pixel AR to Square. Then it is widescreen.

Does that make sense?

Doesn't seem to, but it works.

lol I see...doesn't seem to make sense to me either, but I won't argue with it if it works :)

It is weird...
It's widescreen when I'm editing it. Widescreen if I export it with WMV or Cineform AVI, but 4x3 if I export it with QT in anything other than 1.0 square.

Very odd indeed.

The Pixel AR is HDV 1.333 with Cineform and WMV. When I try that AR with QT it comes out squished.

Anyone need help compressing? My offer to ripupthehwy goes for you also. I do not want anyone to not be able to enter due to compression. Send me a PM if you need help.

I'm an idiot. lol

I think i got it figured out now. It's exporting at a very slow speed, so I think its gonna work this time.

thanks

Huge props to you guys helping out with the compression/rendering issues--it keeping the train on the tracks.

Working on encoding our SpyFest submission (SORRY) right now. It's 2.35:1 aspect ratio. Can we upload it in a 640x272 resolution without black bars? Or do we need to upload in 640x360 with black bars? Hope 640x272 is okay because that's what encoding right now.

in vegas 7, when i'm exporting, halfway through it just stops and quits the export.
anyone else have this problem?

I had the same problem when trying to export out to h.264 .mov file. I'd get that QT error. After futzing around for what now seems like forever, I'm going the .mp4 route. I was getting pixelated splotches every few seconds or so, but I think I figured that one out. So now I'm just trying to get it around 50MB. Almost there, I can feel it!

I think i'm gonna go crazy:zombie_smiley: this happens even going mp4. could it be that vegas
is getting to a point in my timeline that it just dosn't like? I've tried removing effects
and such as well... nothin' works?

I have never had any success exporting a QT file directly from Vegas. I always had to export as an uncompressed file and then used QT Pro to encode it to a h.264.

I haven't read it myself yet, but this is supposed to be a good tutorial on creating a nice h.264 version of your film. Might be worth checking.
