Can HVX do 1080P at 24p and not just 1080i? And to tape or Ext.HDD?

Okay, after many hours of serious searching I only found out thatHVX processes 1080p, but it's never specified if it records full progressive. I know it does 1080i/24p, but I must know about 1080p

Please help me!

1) Can the HVX record 1080p at 24p to tape?

2) If DVCPRO tape cannot store 1080p/24p, can the P2 card?

3) Can a DC powered ext.HDD be used asa mock-P2 via IEEE/USB without the aid of a computer? Like a backpack setup with no laptop, just a direct write? Can the HVX handle that pressure?

Thank you so much. I have spent almost 8 hours reading everything I can about the HVX and I still need these questions answered. I appreciate it.

thanks for the answers, but only DV to tape??
waitaminute, then what's the existence of DVCPRO HD tapes? I could swear that tape can at least handle 720, right?
And if you're wrong about that, my friend, then what about question #2?

I can concur that you are right about the drive issue, though, thanks for ending my confusion 'bout that one!

I need to know the specific res limitations of tape regarding 24p HD, especially all-progessive.

DVCPRO HD tapes are for the earlier HD cameras that came out with DVCPRO codec. Still used today but P2 is the most efficient.

The P2 records 1080....720...and 480.

There isn't really any limitations to using DVCPRO tapes except you have to sit there and capture from a deck. With the P2 cards..you get the HD picture with the timesaving feature of not having to capture. Just copy and paste the files from the card to the computer.

No drop frames to worry about like tape...graininess from excessive use of the tape...the P2 cards don't wear out like the tapes do. You can only use the tape a certain number of times before it starts going funky with dropped frames and glitches.

If you shoot 1080i/24p on the P2 card..then go to edit...take out the pulldown and you'll be working with pure 1080/24p images.

:( Can somebody please just say if I can shoot 1080p at 24 onto tape?
1080P

Progressive

I know what a P2 card can do.
Can tape do this??

DVCPRO-HD tape exists, and the cheapest DVCPRO-HD tape deck is $25,000 and is about 4x as large as an HVX. You're not gonna get a deck like that mounted in a $5,000 camera.

The only tape on an HVX is a DV tape.

Of course not. The tape is DV only. No high def. DV.

If you want to chain the camera to a DVCPRO-HD deck then yes you'll record 1080p to that tape, but that deck costs $25,000.

Holy crap. I can't believe after all I've read, I didn't comprehend that the deck doesn't record HD shots to tape....
ever, at 720 nor 1080....
so sad that I can't use tapes

Thank you all for the replies, and if anyone has anything to add, pleasee do so!

why tape??? p2 is soooo convenient, and reusable, and more reliable, and creates potential for reaalllllly long takes (with hot swapping), and gives you freedom to shoot different resolutions and framerates, and is just plain better. if you really love tape then get an hdv cam. but no variable rates and hdv compression sucks imho.

I agree about the camera alternatives, as I won't abandon the AVX for this lacking, however, P2 cards cost a bundle, and require on-set dumping.
KA-CHING

But if that's what it takes to use that cam, I guess I have no choice.
Tape+my wallet=good

on set dumping used to sound like a pain to me too but once you do it, you see it's no big deal. laptop with pcmcia slot. insert card. copy contents to hard drive. put card back in camera, erase and shoot more. if you have two cards and someone to dump for you, there is usually no downtime. best part, at the end of the day your footage is immediately available for editing. no capuring tapes....

p2 prices dropping too. if you use good tapes then an 8gb card is equal to the price of around 100 tapes.

Well,

Not sure where to park this question, especially because it's basic but while the topic of format seems to be going on...here it goes:

The HVX200 is set to 1080i/24p
When I import my clips into adblocked it says in the stat information that
the frame rate is 59.94i which someone had previously explained to me that it's still 24fps but that I was shooting 24p in a 59.94i basket so to speak.

I then view it in P2 Log and on the bottom of the P2 Log screen in the right hand corner it says: Video Format: DVCPRO HD 1080i60, 29.97 FPS. Now that's making menervous. What's going on, am I shooting in 24p or what? Is P2 Log
converting the frame rate for viewing?

I've done a test clip in 24P in f6 and 24pa on F5 and F6 and get the same results when I import into P2 Log (DVCPRO HD 1080i60, 29.97 FPS). All I know is that I got to deliver in 1080i/24fps and uncompressed.

Please help---in the thick of it. Thanks

At 1080P/24 you are capturing 24 frames and recoding that with a 2:3 pulldown into 60 interlaced fields. The PeLog is showing you the right info. The pictures should also show you that the image you have captured have a look that is different than that of video.

What you will want to do if 24P(23.98) is your hearts desire, is to extract that 24 frame infoand throw away the extra stuff. Now if you shot 24P you will need to render that out with Cinema Tools, and then next time shoot at 24PA where you can set up your log and capture window to extract on ingest. You didn't say which system you were using, so I have used FCP as my example.

Hope this helps,

Jan
